I'm wondering how the site generates traction nowadays, given the 3DS is mere months away from losing internet capability. Is it a fact that everyone is sticking around back from the heyday of 2019-12? Or is their new avenues in interest created by the modding scene?
Just something I think about the few times I find myself back here, it's good to see things are still running. This site was and will forever be a huge part of my childhood.
I joined back in 2019, and despite being 24 years old at the time, the same thing that brought so many kids to thus site back during its heyday (lack of access to regular internet-enabled devices due to overprotective parents) brought me here, and at a time when I was incredibly depressed and felt completely hopeless.
This website literally saved my life back then, and frankly it's the only thing keeping me sane now, and I've been trying to revive this website as best as I can given the ridiculous RL obstacles that constantly get in my way (meaning my dad), including by reviving the SDK Quilt (FKA the DSiPaint Quilt), reviving Member Appreciation Day, holding a Pokemon Showdown tournament for the members here, etc.
Anyway, I'm rambling too much lol (I do that a lot), but I hope you stick around and help breathe some more life into this place.
Actually no, the internet will still work on 3DS after online play shuts down, you'd simply need custom servers to play games online. Not even homebrew required for the browsers.
As for the members, most of the actually active people are surprisingly newer such as me from 2021. Most of the people here that joined either prefer these types of sites or joined because its one of the few sites they can access still (although I can't think of anyone as active as me that joined in spite of not having any need or special interest other than "3DS websites" or "DSi websites").
3DSPaint 4 Life, using this website will always be better than Twitter XD.
Ah thanks for letting me know! I completely forgot about the DNS exploits despite using them recently haha.
It's quite cool to see that what I somewhat see as a relic of the past can gain new attention ages after it's original purposes userbase moved on to newer gen consoles (I'm a DSiPaint user.)
But yeah fully agree with that last statement, Twitter is full of so much headache inducing content and hatred staying well away from it does wonders for mental health lol.
Lol. For 3DS/Wii U you'd have to hack the systems for those games, but the DSi/Wii games would work even on 3DS/Wii U without hax. Still amazing, Pokemon BW2 has voice/video chat so id seriously consider it as a chat platform if used right (same for Animal Crossing City Folk on wii except no text chat).
Indeed so, its even funnier that theres plenty who still use 3DS/DSi as their default options. Admittedly if i ever went insane, id start using this website on my Wii with a keyboard/mouse exclusively.
Paint at it's worst is still better than normie sites at the best they can get these days. If I can't self-host it and its not a cool site like Paint, no reason to use it anymore unless you can make money off it (which is rare).
Yeah, I just got the Entralink/Dreamyard function running on my copy of White 2 which is something I could never do as a child because the Pokemon site was just refusing to let me sign up at all costs, so it's amazing to finally be able to access a new feature from a decade old game I already got so much out of.
The DSi browser is so nostalgic for me, being like my first gateway into the internet, using this site only protected me from a lot of the weirder shit I would have been subjected to if I had access to a more mainstream social media network at that age.
Yeah mainstream social media sites are just a rabbit-hole of people trying to anger each other, I don't remember a single bad thing happening on here, but I do miss the days where the chatrooms would have a good amount of people in them at all times and it just felt like there was so much more to do on the site. Very glad I can login and talk to people like yourself still though, would be very sad to see this place completely abandoned.
I didn't even know that works via DNS exploit XD, i'll have to do that soon (i've had my copy since 2020, right before COVID actually).
DSi Browser is nice, I actually use it as a benchmark for sites to determine if it is a poorly designed website or not as most pages work fine with it if they're not loading 30 scripts. Forced-HTTPS often prevents loading at all though so i then test on N3DS which is the 2nd "worst" I have for it. DSi only has 16MB, but that loads simple pages well and a properly created website can still load it well unless theres audio, video, or other files that aren't supported like PDF. Websites like this usually load almost instantly whereas websites now take a second to load then load more scripts while still loading what should already be loaded in, id argue its used for planned obscolence of devices by some companies such as Microsoft or Google.
Ye. Chatrooms still sometimes have people, hell in mid-2023 it had like 12 people but usually its only like 3-5 when people join them. The groups are active and usually used instead of chatrooms now (btw ive sent u invites to the two most active which are also top-groups i believe). Mainly looks cooler, custom CSS names, sometimes less admin watch, etc.
It's not as simple as the event distribution exploit, it was a good 40 minute setup process for me. You have to download a PC software called "Entralinked" which you can find on GitHub to get it working, which also has instructions (but it's still very easy to get lost because they don't go into too much detail.)
I discovered a lot of stuff as a 9 year old I shouldn't have through the DSi browser, so in a way I'm glad that videos never worked on it lol.
Thank you, I'll be sure to join them, don't know how much I'll be popping on to the site but I'll try be around more than my usual once a year visit.
Lol i dont blame u. On N3DSXL which i had, videos worked but not well. Ive gotten videos working on Wii U, tho i dont believe i can use AV1 WEBMs if i want that which saves space usually. MP4 isnt a big deal, its just i cant upload more than 25MB normally on GitHub and that means already usually low quality videos on a website have to be lower quality.
Hope u have fun here again, feel free to make more blogs too lol (we always need more of them, im gonna try making 2+ blogs daily at least until 1k blogs if not for the whole year).
Lmaooooooo. 25MB is still a lot surprisingly if the video is low enough quality and compressed right, but obviously i at least want 480p for shorter videos, 240p minimum for longer videos. Audio can be good with 64kbps and the bitrate doesnt have to be amazing, but still i need to find a way to compress things more while not fucking the quality too much.
Thx lol, also if u do i will read them the moment i see them XD
