As an ex-barista, I get by with Mr. Coffee's espresso machine. It's cheap, sub $100, and has a milk frother on it. Mine is p much the one I linked but without the frothing pitcher and water pitcher, it was ~$10 cheaper ($60). There wasn't a particular reason for that, it was just the one they had at Walmart lol. Just maintain it properly and you shouldn't have any issues.

I just use an electric grinder bc it was in the same aisle as the espresso machine. Whenever it inevitably dies, I'll probably get a manual one. No particular preference though, it really doesn't matter.

The freshness of your coffee and the water quality will have more of an effect on flavor than your equipment will, assuming that you're grinding the coffee to the correct fineness. Espresso brewing requires a pretty fine grind.

As for the roast, I get the cheapest whole bean coffee I can get at Kroger/Walmart. Whole bean is important, it takes away some of the guesswork when it comes to grinding the coffee. I've used Espresso roasts (typically dark roasts), but really any coffee will do the job. Rn I've just got a bag of Kroger's Kona roast, a medium roast. It's really just preference here more than anything.

Don't stress it too much. What machine doesn't matter that much. Consider what you think you can afford.

As for coffee, trying to find local roasters can sometimes be fun. Trying different things every time you run out.

You may already know this but espresso machines can be really dangerous because of the amount of pressure they use on near-boiling water.

Honestly I’m a coffee fiend but I love me a Keurig. It might be the best route if you’re just going for some wakey juice. I prefer the Keurigs that offer different sizes (4oz, 6oz, 8oz - sorry, idk the metric units for this D: ) but there are also single-cup keurig too where you just pour in the amount of water you want.
