I looked around for the hundredth time at the cell I was in.
Abby was seated next to me on a hard concrete bench. The sign outside read "Interrogation Cell", which explained the lack of conventional cell furnishings, such as a toilet and cot.
We had sat there almost an hour. I couldn't help but wonder why no one had come to interrogate us yet. As if reading my mind, Abby broke the silence.
"Do you think they're going to send someone down to us soon?"
"I don't know." I responded without looking. "We might be stuck down here forever for all they care."
"They seem like nice people....just...misinformed. This wouldn't have happened if —"
I cut her off. "If you hadn't brought us here, Abby!"
"Oh shut up! You knew about this place. I could tell the moment we got here. You didn't make any effort to stop me from bringing us here!"
"I did! I slapped the Bible out of your hands because I thought it was the book!"
"How'd you even know about the book anyways?"
"It was—"
Suddenly we heard footsteps approaching, halting our argument.
Kashi and a guard appeared.
The guard unlocked the cell and Kashi entered, closing it behind him.
Adressing the guard, he ordered, "Leave us. I'll call for you when I need you."
The guard gave a skeptical look, but retreated down the hall.
When he was out of earshot, we spoke.
"Kashi! What's going—"
"Please. Call me Scole-Kasha. I don't know if I can trust you any longer. All I know is that you aren't liars. But that doesn't change the fact that you could be spies."
"Then why hasn't anyone else heard of it?" I asked. "How do you know?"
"I've heard people speak of it before...something's going on. It's like someone wanted you to be framed. I can't imagine why, though."
We didn't see Roy standing outside until he spoke.
"I don't know why either. But we know what's happened now." He said as he unlocked the door. "Come, out. You are free again. Our technicians found that our database was hacked shortly after your arrest. Earth's files did exist, but were missing. A deep search found the data hidden in room SL1d."
Kashi gasped. "No...it couldn't be!"
More footsteps approached as new guards brought Sono, arms bound, into the cell.
He looked the very image of bruised pride, begging with anyone who listened.
"I assure you, it wasn't me. Someone set me up! Kashi! You know me. Would I ever commit such a thing against my homeland?"
Kashi looked worried. "What evidence do you have against him?"
Roy shrugged. "Oh, not much. Just surveillance videos showing him stealing the data and hiding it, the physical data in his room, DNA matching his all over the scene of crime, and an eyewitness whom he tied up and left for dead in a storage closet. Rather slopy work for a man of your training, Sono-Larrs." Roy eyed him with contempt as Sono fell silent.
Kashi looked hurt. Taking one last look at Sono, he marched away, leaving the rest of us standing in silence.
Roy was the first to speak, as usual "Well, Equillia offers its deepest apologies for what has taken place here. We will do whatever we can to make it up to you. Now, let's return to the computer and see if we can't get you two home this time." He said with a booming laugh.
Abby and I looked at eachother and then followed him down the echoing hallway. We didn't understand what was going on. It all seemed like a dream. A dream that seemed to have no end in sight for us.
When I saw Chapter Five in your blogs, but that it hadn't been featured, I had initially assumed that you were still working on it, but I'm glad that I checked it out anyway!
Out of curiosity, though, why didn't you snubmit it to be featured?
(I suspect that more people would've read it if you had.)
