Well, it's the end of an era. If you're looking to buy digital copies of games you've been holding off on for the 3DS or Wii U - you better do it soon. On February 15, 2022, Nintendo announced what rumors had been going around about for years. These dates apply to the American market. The dates have been sooner for other markets around the world. It had been rumored prior to this it would happen sometime in 2022, but we hadn't gotten official calendar dates yet.
On May 23, 2022, Nintendo is planning on making it no long possible to use a credit card to add funds to an account in the Nintendo eshop on these devices.
On August 29, 2022, Nintendo is planning on making it so you will no longer be able to use a Nintendo eshop card to add funds to an account.
Late March 2023, you will no longer be able to redeem download codes at all for the Nintendo 3ds or Wii U.
A big question on my mind is will Nintendo allow us to redownload games past these cut off dates? You currently can still redownload your already purchased Wii titles, but will the same apply to the Wii U and 3DS? Only time will tell!
I think this will lead to an increase in value for aftermarket 3ds games specifically in the coming years. A few 3ds titles like fire emblem awakening a physical copy goes for more than what it was originally sold for. With the possibility of digitally purchasing games going away for these consoles the only place to buy them will be the aftermarket or if the game is eventually ported to Switch. What are your thoughts?
Hearing about this again enrages me simply due to the fact that they were willing to sabotage their own funds they could gain from 3DS into a method of forcing people to buy the switch and pay for the "really good" online service...
Memories, shame that video games have become so disposable and there Isn't more effort to preserve games, It all comes down to paying to keep them protected
