What's this!? A poem by Siling-La instead of a song? Yes, it's true. I haven't released a poem here in years, but today inspiration struck and I'm rather proud of this one.
Cyrano De Bergerac is a famous literary character from a play sharing his name. He is a poet, a warrior, a writer, a physically disfigured man, but a honorable gentleman and a artist of words. In this classic play, Cyrano secretly falls in love with his cousin, Roxanne, but Roxanne is in love with another man. Since both Cyrano and this other man are in the same guard in the cadets, Roxanne asks Cyrano to protect him and ensure he is safe in the wars to come. Through many events you may read about elsewhere, Cyrano helps this other man to court Roxanne and gives the man all the words to say to her and the "pretty nothings that mean everything" that he may write to her in letters of affection. Cyrano loves Roxanne so much that he's willing to help the other man court her because he wants her to be happy. The other man ends up dying and Cyrano never tells Roxanne the truth, protecting the memory of her love. Cyrano's love is kept a secret from Roxanne until his time of death. A sort of forbidden love that he chooses. This poem I wrote is written as if Cyrano is the one writing it. It is about his love towards Roxanne.
"Forbidden Love" POEM BY Siling-La
Forbidden love's a curious thing
Its joy and dream's a bitter sting.
To look upon one who doesn't know
That you're staring on them so.
The fear that if they learned you'd lose
The love your heart still holds onto.
It is a curse, yet I can't fight.
I cannot bear to snuff this light.
Although it brings such torturous pain,
To live in love is naught but gain.
If love is true and heart's loyal
Then goodwill is the only goal.
To service is the lonesome thought
And dare to tell, you never ought.
Forbidden love's a curious thing.
Its joy and dream's a bitter sting.
So is it worth it? I can't say,
But as for me, on this one day,
I feel the pull of love so dear
And I'd rather not suppress its cheer.
