During the recent meeting, we discussed tentative plans for the community's future. This blog summarizes those plans so far.
General Plans There is no longer a plan to sell the websites. Instead, we will be modernizing and expanding them.
Austin ( @BlarFlargen ) will be taking on the role as webmaster for the websites, helping to get caught up on bugs and adding new content made for modern Internet browsers and devices. 3DSPaint.com and DSiPaint.com will continue to support Nintendo's handheld devices as long as possible, getting bug fixes and appropriate updates. We will be adding a new website to the community, possibly building upon the existing (and unfinished) SDKCommunity.com or coming up with a new general name for the community. This new website will not be held back with the screen and memory limitations of Nintendo's mobile devices, so expect many enhancements and new features.
Premium Accounts To fund these updates and compensate Austin for his time, we will be adding premium accounts. These will add new features that go beyond was free membership offers and allow us to remain free of third-party ad networks. We are still deciding what all premium membership will include, if there will be multiple tiers, and what prices will be. The accounts will likely be integrated through Patreon, automatically converting current patrons to premium members. Premium membership will not be linked to admin promotions and will not increase the chances of promotions.
So far, these are a few ideas proposed:
- Badges beside usernames, like other social media platforms have
- Ability to upload higher resolution images for use in avatars, blogs, profiles, etc. (which would scale down for 3DSPaint.com and DSiPaint.com)
- Credits toward promoting or boosting content, kind of like internal community advertisements for blogs, groups, etc.
- Possibly physical rewards fulfilled through Patreon
(If you have any other ideas, toss them in the comments!)
Contingent Updates Depending on revenue and growth, we may bring back a modern mobile app for the community, as well. Benefits of a mobile app include syncing of content for offline viewing, AI-based search integration, push notifications, powerful painting tools, home screen widget, faster interface, inherent dark mode, image editing, etc.
For avatar creation - I feel like it should have already been limited to a set resolution so 4k images didn't fill your storage up, but it is also nice for things like my profile that provide quality while working on older devices like the DSi and 3DS
