The Friends of the ABC

Illustration by Gustave Brion, Public Domain

"They belong, in a certain measure, to history: Enjolras, Combeferre, Jean Prouvaire, Feuilly, Courfeyrac, Bahorel, Lesgle or Laigle, Joly, Grantaire. These young men formed a sort of family, through the bond of friendship" -Les Misérables

The Friends of the ABC, or in the original French, Les Amis de l'abc, are a group of fictional revolutionaries from 1832 France, in the book they partake in the June Rebellion. The June Rebellion was a real event, a failed revolution.
The name of the group is a pun, in French ABC is pronounced ah-bay-se, similar to the French word for abased, basically the pun means that they are the friends of the people.

Character Profiles

Enjolras

<p class="Enjolras>Enjolras is the leader of the group, and he believes very strongly in the Revolution, he is also one of the last to die. He is associated with red and in the musical version sings a song called Red and Black. He is described as being very handsome.

"Enjolras was a charming young man, who was capable of being terrible"

"One would have said, to see the pensive thoughtfulness of his glance, that he had already, in some previous state of existence, traversed the revolutionary apocalypse. He possessed the tradition of it as though he had been a witness"

"thought flowers good for nothing except to conceal the sword"

"He was the marble lover of liberty"

"His speech was harshly inspired, and had the thrill of a hymn"

"A National Guardsman who had taken aim at Enjolras, lowered his gun, saying: 'It seems to me that I am about to shoot a flower.'"

Combeferre

Combeferre is described as being more realistic than Enjolras, he is interested in moths and believes in equality.

"he said: 'Revolution, but civilization'"

"affirmed nothing, not even miracles; denied nothing, not even ghosts"

"The good must be innocent, he repeated incessantly"

"between two lights, his preference was rather for illumination than conflagration. A conflagration can create an aurora, no doubt, but why not await the dawn? A volcano illuminates, but daybreak furnishes a still better illumination. Possibly, Combeferre preferred the whiteness of the beautiful to the blaze of the sublime. A light troubled by smoke, progress purchased at the expense of violence, only half satisfied this tender and serious spirit"

"Combeferre, transfixed by three blows from a bayonet in the breast at the moment when he was lifting up a wounded soldier, had only time to cast a glance to heaven when he expired"

Jean Prouvaire

Jean Prouvaire is the only one of the Friends of the ABC with a first name, all the rest are exclusively called by their last names. He also has a nickname (that only he ever calls himself) from the middle ages, Jehan. He is a poet and he dies alone.

"Jean Prouvaire was a still softer shade than Combeferre"

"Jean Prouvaire was in love; he cultivated a pot of flowers, played on the flute, made verses, loved the people"

"Above all, he was good; and, a very simple thing to those who know how nearly goodness borders on grandeur"

"He spoke softly, bowed his head, lowered his eyes, smiled with embarrassment, dressed badly, had an awkward air, blushed at a mere nothing, and was timid. Yet he was intrepid"

"Jean Prouvaire was timid only in repose. Once excited, he burst forth, a sort of mirth accentuated his enthusiasm, and he was at once both laughing and lyric"

"The roll was called. One of the insurgents was missing. And who was it? One of the dearest. One of the most valiant. Jean Prouvaire. He was sought among the wounded, he was not there. He was sought among the dead, he was not there. He was evidently a prisoner. Combeferre said to Enjolras:- 'They have our friend; we have their agent. Are you set on the death of that spy?' 'Yes,' replied Enjolras; 'but less so than on the life of Jean Prouvaire.' This took place in the tap-room near Javert's post. 'Well,' resumed Combeferre, 'I am going to fasten my handkerchief to my cane, and go as a flag of truce, to offer to exchange our man for theirs.' 'Listen,' said Enjolras, laying his hand
