*This was written assuming you know the game's basic controls*
Are you looking to up your skills in Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Wondering how people do some of the cool things you've seen? Well I'm here to tell you.
Some tricks are available to nearly all characters, while others are character specific. Here are some that can give you an edge:
-Edge Guarding This is possibly the most widely used techniques. Because only one character can be grabbing a ledge at a time, jumping on to a ledge can preventyour opponent from recovering. Its simplicity, although not necessarily ease of use, make it a popular asset.
-DACUS Stands for Dash Attack Canceled Up Smash, has become standard use for many players. It is performed (Gamecube controller only) by doing a dash attack, and almost simultaneously doing Up C-stick+Z. Performed correctly, it will result in your character sliding from their dash attack directly into their up smash. Useful, especially for those like Snake, allowing them to quickly slide around the stage. The timing and effectiveness differs between charatcers however.
-Teching Is a simple manuever in which you hit the Shield button the moment before hitting a surface (ground or wall) canceling out your momentum. When used on the ground, you get up (or roll); the wall, you don't bounce and fall at a normal rate (for some, you wall jump.) This helps to prevent bouncing.
-Perfect Shield By using your shield the moment before an attack connects, you can block the attack without any weakening of your shield. This also allows you to counterattack your opponent while they finish up there attack animation. Simple and useful in any situation, but the timing may be hard for some.
-Directional Influence A very simple technique. When sent flying by an opponent (or while you're jumping) you have some control over your air movement. By holding the analog stick in the opposite direction, you can survive for longer periods, even at high percentages (especially when used in tandem with other techniques such as Momentum Canceling).

There are MANY more advanced tricks present within the game, but this is it for part 1, I'm lazy :3
Edge guarding is cheap, but if you're skillful enough, you can stall in the air and wait for their invincibilty frames to wear off and knock him of the edge :p
