Peer pressure-the pressuring of a person by their peer(s)
When you think of the phrase “peer pressure”, what do you think of?
Probably someone pressuring you into a bad thing, correct? But there are indeed cases where there is good peer pressure involved. Many times your friends pressure you to stop doing things (getting rid of bad habits, such as smoking, etc.) that hurt you. This would be considered positive peer pressure.
But, those cases are rare. Many times, people are indirectly pressured into doing things they'd rather not. An example of this would be one of the people in your close groups of friends offers you drugs, and when/if you refuse them, saying that they won't be friends with you anymore.
The truth is, if they say that, they aren't really your friends. And yes, you hear this all the time from your teachers, but it's the truth.
An example of positive peer pressure:
My friend Breanna's uncle burnt down a monument in our town. We pressured her to tell the police she knew, because keeping important case information from them is wrong. And guess what happened today? She came in and found us right away, showing us her award for courage and a check for $1,000.
I believe that hearing it from someone your age helps more then hearing it from an adult. I'm not sure why its like that, but it is. So, take it from me. Don't get forced into something bad by peer pressure, and take heed to the good.
I think any time a person tries to make someone else do something they don't want to do, it's wrong.
You're not the one that has to live with the decision.
*applauds* Exellent article! You're in the right about the peer pressure thing. Even if the person who did the wrong is in your own family, I firmly believe that you should fo the right thing. Pretty much the point, me thinks. <
