Health risks
Nintendo has publicly stated that the 3D mode of the 3DS is not intended for use by children ages six and younger, citing possible harm to their vision. Nintendo suggests that younger players use the device's 2D mode instead, although the American Optometric Association has assured parents that 3D gaming in moderation would not be harmful for children. Several eye doctors said that there are no serious vision-related health effects associated with 3-D play and concluded that such warnings was a precaution measure from Nintendo. Satoru Iwata said that the warnings were intended as a precautionary measure to inform customers of possible dangers as well as to protect the company from litigation.
