Earlier today, it was announced that the critically acclaimed indie game Cave Story was being brought over to the 3DS.
Here's a basic overview of the phenomenon that is Cave Story (Wikipedia):
The game focuses on an amnesiac silent protagonist who awakens in a cave. Through his explorations, he discovers a plot by the Doctor, a megalomaniac who intends to force the inhabitants of the cave to fight for him in his bid to conquer the world. The protagonist is thrust into the position of savior as he endeavors to defeat the Doctor.
Cave Story pays homage the legendary 2D games of yesteryear, and is an amazing game, which is incredible considering it didn't, and doesn't have a huge developer behind it, and was released back in 2004. It basically plays out like Metroid and Castlevania (which the creator Daisuke Amaya admitted to having drawn much inspiration from his playing of them), in which you explore many corridors, solving puzzles and taking down enemies with equipped items. The game also drew inspiration for its old school art style from games from the NES/SNES, with beautifully crafted characters and environments. Heck, even the NES-esque music is great. You get that genuine feel of a classic game from these.
In 2010, we saw Cave Story ported over to the Wii and DSiWare, with a few improvements. While these were welcome improvements, the were more or less the same game; visuals and all. However, the 3DS version will be different in several ways.
While all of the previous releases of Cave Story were downloads, the 3DS version will be sold at retail. This means that more content can be put into the cartridge, as compared to a download. One of the other big changes made to the game is that, because the game is being remade from the ground up, the visuals will changed to those of 3D models on a 2D plane (2.5D?)
The developer (Nicalis) and publisher (Nippon Ichi) have stated that other Easter eggs and secrets will be added as well. This is all that is known at the present.
Cave Story was the lure to my getting into the Indie gaming scene. It remains one of the best Indie games, nay, the best of the last decade. It really feels like a lost NES/SNES game the was recently rediscovered. Hopefully the 3DS version can live up to and surpass the bar set by the original. When more information on the game is released, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be here to tell you guys.
The game's launch window release date feels so far away...
If you wish to download the original PC version of the game (it's free), go here, but don't forget to download the translation patch as well.
