The threat of a tsunami prompted the U.S. National Weather Service to issue a warning for at least 50 countries and territories after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan Friday.
The wide-ranging list includes Russia and Central American countries like Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica and the U.S. state of Hawaii. The weather service's bulletin said it was intended "as advice to government agencies."Experts are saying that it could be anywhere from 4 to 10 meters. That's higher than some of the Pacific islands are above sea level.
Sirens sounded in Hawaii around 10 p.m. Thursday (3 a.m. ET), warning residents they could expect tsunami waves five hours later.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Kauai was the first Hawaiian island hit by the waves, which swept across the remainder of the island chain as six foot surges pushed waves ashore.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center early Friday issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas along the United States and Canadian west coasts. The tsunami warning includes coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Conception to the Oregon-Washington border. It also includes coastal areas of Alaska from Amchitka Pass to Attu.
Waves are predicted to hit the western coast of the United States between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. EST Friday. Evacuations were ordered in parts of Washington and Oregon, and people near the beach and in low-lying coastal areas in Santa Barbara County, California, were told to move immediately inland to higher ground.
This is will be one of the most significant events to have affected the West Coast of the United States probably in out life time. This is a very serious situation. If you live in any of theses areas please listen to state and local officials to evacuate and stay away from the coastline.
I'll try to keep everyone updated on this Historic event.
I was driving along the Santa Barbara Coast in CA yesterday and there was a tsunami warning on one of the traffic message things. Nothing happened, though. c:
The sirens were cute actually.
Funny thing is, you could barely hear them while living in the barracks.
Still, there is a low chance that California, Hawaii and even Australia will be hit hard.
Taiwan on the other hand...
