Today I am going to talk about smoking and weigh up the facts and arguments and conclude with my opinion about it. I myself don't smoke.
The facts
Smoking kills 440,000 americans every year.
It is the main cause of Lung cancer
It is a very expensive habit.
There is more in a cigarette than niccotine.
Reasons against:
[Economic]
This is a drain on your money. It is very expensive. It costs about five-ten dollars (thanks for the correction) for your standard pack and they run out very quickly.
[Moral]
It is wrong to smoke, other people can breathe in the smoke emitted from the cigarette (known as second-hand smoking). A member on here has lung problems because of second-hand smoking.
Here are some opinions about it from OTHER members. Only I know who they are, don't ask who they are.
1. It is useless, it drains people's wallets and funds the government. I think they shouldn't invest money in health problems caused by smoking.
2. It is harmful to people who don't even smoke, I was brought up with a smoker and I have lung problems.
3. I do smoke but I don't promote it.
4. You shouldn't but if you do not around others, the smoke emitted is more dangerous than the cigarette itself.
(You may comment saying what you said if you want)
In conclusion smoking is a choice made by an individual, it usually happens when they are teenagers and either smoke with their friends or look uncool. It doesn't matter either way though, you will breathe in the smoke from your friends. It wouldn't be bad, but it's addictive so your body has no time to repair. It is better to not smoke at all.
Personnally, I'd like smoking/sale of cigarettes to be illegal, but that would promote illegal import, which is a pest and likely to damage health more =/
1st, it all depends on the tax. Here in Chicago alone, it's roughly $1.80 for the Tax, and that depends on the store.
2nd, It's not "Immoral", which is what you're implying in the [moral] section. That is your opinion. Smoking is not bad, it is the nicotine, which is an addictive substance not the Tobacco alone.
3rd, it's commonly used as a stress-reliever, depending on the person. With the Government banning smoking in most places, people are becoming more stress, in addition to several other factors.
4th, I'm surprised you didn't mention this in your perfect [economical] Section, but, Smokers pay the highest rate for Life & Health Insurance. Learn your details before you criticize other's choices.
5th, You can roll your own cigarettes, which is less addictive, as there is no added nicotine in natural Tobacco, which is legal to grow, and/or could be obtained from smoking stores.
6th, Why don't you morons ever rant against Corn-Cob Pipes or Cigars?
I do not smoke, but, it's people like you who make me want to, if anything, just to spite the hell out of you.
A DOLLAR? A pack of cigarettes is usually between five dollars, and ten dollars depending on the brand.
I don't get the whole peer pressure thing, it's a stupid excuse to smoke, or to do anything really. I've been asked at least 7 times if I wanted a cigarette [And a few times if I wanted to smoke weed..] and I said no, it's not that hard.
A lot of people at my school smoke.. but the school started up a program for people wanting to quit, which is nice, because it might be hard for some people.
More bad things about smoking are: bad skin, bad breath, yellow teeth/nails, you smell like cigarettes, smoking can cause bone problems, joint problems, heart problems, different types of cancers.. a lot of other diseases... reduced athletic performance obviously...
No offence xP you really should try to stop though, especially since you have lung problems
