There's something interesting I found about the MPO (multi-picture object) images used on the Nintendo 3DS (and a few 3D digital cameras) after transferring them to my laptop with the SD card: A Web Browser and paint program will open the MPO file as a regular 2D JPEG image.
After doing a little more research into the file format, I found it is little more than two concatenated JPEG files with some header information to describe the paring. In fact, the MPO files from the 3DS camera are twice the size of the JPEG files saved along side them, backing up this find. For image viewers that are not made to handle these multiple JPEGs in one file, they simple ignore anything past the first JPEG image as junk.
This is all great because it allows for compatibility with devices that can't display 3D. Should Nintendo decide to support 3D in the NetFront browser for the Nintendo 3DS, they just have to commission ACCESS to develop the browser for the added support of the MPO file format, and suddenly websites that appear as 2D on everything else will be in their full 3D glory. Maybe this test image below will show in 3D on all our Nintendo 3DS screens in May...
