Lucas was crouched in the shadows, slowly sneaking up on his target. His paws, yes PAWS, made almost no sound as he crept forward. He was just a few feet from his prey when the figure before him froze. Lucas lunged thinking it was game over, but he only caught thin air.
Someone behind him laughed. It was a squeaky laugh. A laugh he had known almost his whole life. His best friend in the compound, Jacob Whiskers.
"You'll get me someday Lucas, like maybe when I've gone deaf!" Jacob laughed. Jacob was a mouse. Well, part mouse anyways. In fact, if you were in the compound, you were part something. Lucas was part cat, and as contrary to nature as it was, had instantly struck up a strong bond with Jacob.
"Aw shaddup Whiskers, I'll be the one laughing when you're flat on your back and I've got my paws around that skinny little neck of yours." Lucas grumbled. He wasn't really angry, and Jacob knew it by the way he shook his head grinning.
"Keep dreaming Lucas. The day you catch me unaware is the day I dye my fur blue." Jacob snorted sarcastically. His hearing was unnatural, even for a Hybrid. During some lab tests, Jacob had been recorded hearing things that even the most sensitive mikes couldn't register.
Lucas chuckled imagining his rodent friend blue. "I'll remember that. Ha... Blue." Lucas stared off into space and his emerald green eyes glazed over. Jacob laughed at this. He knew it would be awhile before Lucas regained his senses and decided to head to the cafe for a quick bite to eat. Today was the day the salad bar had serving a fruit buffet.
On his to the cafe, Jacob saw the Director and some stranger in a suit talking quietly. Jacob was about to say hello when he caught a few words.
"No! You can't shutdown my compound! I've put to much work and effort into my research!" Director Phoenix whispered angrily. The stranger sighed.
"You know I don't want to, but the Council has deemed "Project Hybrid" a crime against nature and has ordered the termination of all the subjects." He said with a tone that showed concern, but not enough to make it sound any less horrifying to Jacob.
Jacob's heart beat like a jack hammer on steroids. "Termination." That was what the man had said. They were all going to be killed like common pests. He ran back to his shared room.
He was almost in tears when he flung the door open and culred up in his bed. He started sniffling and soon he was whipering, tears welling up in his eyes. It just wan't possible. It wasn't FAIR!
Lucas was concerned. Jacob NEVER acted like this. Not even when the cafe had a cheese and fruit shortage. He sat beside Jacob on his bed.
"Jacob? You okay pal?" Lucas asked worriedly. "What's wrong?"
Jacob lost it. He broke down and sobbed uncontrollably. "Th-they're g-gonna kill us!!!" Jacob all but screamed at Lucas. "The C-council said we're 'crimes against nature' and we're gonna be 'terminated'!!!!" Jacob buried himself under his covers and kept crying.
Lucas's blood ran cold. Terminated. No, he wouldn't let them do that to the only person in the world that he considered to be his brother. He would save Jacob if it killed him.
Lucas clenched his paws so hard, he started bleeding. "Jacob..."
Jacob hicupped and quieted down. He poked his head out from under the covers. "Y-yeah Lucas?"
Lucas grinned at Jacob bravely. "Tonight, we escape the compound! We'll run and never look back!"
