Oh look, another portion in my "A Word on..." Rant Series. OFTO
Political Savii should do well for this one...
I was reading an article on Yahoo News today -here is the Article, by the way- and saw a bunch of comments complaining about : Taxes.
Now, why complain about something that composes the majority funding for where you live, including public services, which, in turn, include libraries, parks, schools, street and sanitation services... It just doesn't make sense.
Now, I'm aware that what the taxes pay for doesn't always come back for everyone to use. Schools, for example. Recently, Oak Park, a neighboring suburb, had a vote to raise taxes to support the schools budget. A lot of parents and adults went up in flames about this, and said no. Some had no children, so I can understand, but why not give back to the town?
Others HAD children, and sill said no! Really? You don't want to fund your child's education?
This was just a rant I needed to get off my chest. If you don't want to pay taxes because one or two of the services don't benefit YOU, go live in the mountains as a hermit.
This is mostly aimed at snotty rich families, as that is what Oak Park comprises of primarily. Every house is about upwards of $700,000.000, even a damn FLAT.
In my opinion it's kind of selfish to not want to pay just because you don't have kids who go to school.. They must know some people with children. Relatives, friends, etc.. They could have kids in the future.. etc.
Rod< I meant, the living descendants, who merely dress-up in a fancy suit to a funeral. The ancestors, them I respect. They earned it.
I'm lower-middle class.
Yes, by taxed equally, do you mean everyone gets a, let's say... 10% rate. THAT I understand. But, that's what those people don't want. They don't want to pay the same tax rate as the others, because they don't have children to go to school.
Yes, as opposed to FOX news, the discriminating "friendly" news source.
Worse comes to worst, The ancestors probably worked for the money too. People who don't earn money legitimately tend to end up blowing it and going bankrupt anyway.
I'm middle class, not rich, not living a box.
As long as everyone get's taxed equally, I have no problem. Plus socialism, which happens to be higher up on the "Less Freedoms Scale," is when you tax in regards to people's wealth. I like as much freedom as possible, but not enough to where the US is out of control. We only need enough Government to keep things in order, not tell us exactly how to live our lives and try to control us.
I can see how the article is misleading. It is from CNN after all, the Democrat and Obama worshiping news company.
I have a few books in mind I think you might enjoy.
@Neon: What I'm trying to say is, people are too stingy to pay for taxes to fund the schools here, even the adults who HAVE children. I never exactly meant to get the rich involved, but that's what Oak Park is: A rich suburb.
Okay.. I understand if you are rich you might have worked hard for it, but non-rich people work very hard for their money too, I don't get how being rich and paying taxes is unfair.. or whatever is trying to be said here.
RoD, if anything, their freaking ancestors, dead or alive, probably gave it to them. Not every rich family earns there cash. I respect those who did, but others... All gifts come with consequences... Well, except gum, maybe...
By the way, most typically, Taxes aren't payed BECAUSED they're too expensive. It's a proven fact that taxes wouldn't be a problem if they were cheap enough for everyone. Why? Because if Taxes were less people would not be trying to find ways to get out of paying them. -fact
Hell yeah, damn those rich families. It's not like they actually did something to earn their money.
Cough Cough
I'm with Hull and BanMan on this one.
When you actually live in another country that overly taxxes and taxxes the rich more than anyone else. You learn to appreciate what USED to be the United States more than anything. It hurts more than just the richies, the entire economy can be affected as well.
I'm not against taxes in general because they are a major support for the government. But if we had a smaller government with fewer superfluous programs and offices, we would have lower taxes. But considering that the government spends so much, it's a long road ahead.
@Kimmy: ... And yet you merely stated "Go Commander", which is parroting what an adult says.
I have done all this observing myself, and have my own opinions on Politics and other topics. We don't agree on everything.
And just so I can be sure that calling you a condescending pest would be effective, how old are you, to call people here "kids"?
This is why kids shouldn't write about stuff like this. Half the time theyre only parroting what someone else has said, who may be incorrect. They don't usually understand the concepts of what they think they're talking about.
The problem isn't so much the taxes as the government spending. During this on-going recession, the people have had to make their own budget cuts to handle higher fuel prices, higher food prices, and higher unemployment. Government officials refuse to live within their means. They would rather ask for more money for their ever-growing programs. Chicage already has some of the highest tax rates in the nation. How can the rest of the country handle education more efficiently than Chicago without raising taxes? That is the question those officials asking for more money should ponder. When I lived in Florida, we had some of the best schools in the nation yet had half the funding per student of southern Florida, where schools were some of the worst in the nation. It just makes me wonder where all that extra money really goes.
Maybe I'm wrong, but since when do taxes go to homeless people?
And not all homeless people are homeless because of drugs/booze/etc(although a good bunch of them probably are..). I have a biography of somebody and her parents became homeless and they didn't do drugs or anything.
@Jake: Again, sorry. It's just that Oak Park is where the rich go, to get away from what they call "The Ghetto", aka: Chicago. Sorry for categorizing all of you.
Wow. K. I'm rich. My mom pays all her taxes etc. What's so ignorant in Commanders comment is that not all homeless people do drugs. SO don't try to speak for everyone or catergorize one singal group as whole. K?
When parents whine about taxes, they give me the image of a crying baby. But I have no right to say this, naturally, because I don't have a job (yet). But, people should be less reluctant to pay taxes for school education, for example.
@Commander: I questioned adding that line, personally... There was a more specific one, but I forgot it...
Again, I'm talking about taxes on the Local level, but yes, I suppose...
I'm not saying your family found a leprachaun and ordered it to defecate money, this is aimed at most suburbanites, whose parents were and are suburbanites, who had things handed to them on a Silver Platter every day. THOSE are the kind of people Oak Park consists of.
Hey, we "snotty Rich families" have to pay taxes too, you know.
Most of our tax money is being wasted on stupid crap. Obama is giving it to homeless people (which, from my own personal experience, they are a lot worse in their attitudes than you think. They think they deserve it all on a silver platter) who use it to buy drugs. Which is why they're homeless in the first place.
Orphans? Yes, I could spare food and money. Veterans who fought for our country? Yes. Someone I know well who is struggling to stay off the streets? Yes.
But to the people who live on the road, the ones who smell like dope, and think they deserve it all given to them on a platter? I wouldn't give up a cent for them.
My family is rich. But we didn't get that way overnight. We worked our asses off for our money just so it can get wasted on some stupid law or drug addict.
Get a job, son. You'll understand better when you realize how hard life can be. Even for us rich people.
@o0sweetness No. That is a terrible idea. You simply tax only the rich, otherwise people won't be motivated to work for more money since they know it will simply be taxed away. That's Economics 101.
@waffle Hm, I hope you aren't serious about Americans being fat and stupid.
The second part however, is true. As my AP Economics teacher said in one of our sets of class notes, "The American public is unappeasable: They want low taxes, no cutbacks on government programs, and a balanced budget, but refuse to accept higher taxes to pay for it."
