Ah, slang. Take a word, change it's meaning, and you have a brand-new word! For example, the word "sick" has somehow been changed from beyond negative to quite positive I say. Even some racist words have been reinvented to be positive in the eyes of the speaker and listener. It's almost like creating a new language. However, slang can be offensive and insensitive, and you may not realize this yourself. The most obvious example of this would be the word "gay", which has been changed to be synonymous with "stupid" and highly offensive to those of the LGBT community. Another prominent word that's very popular with our youth is the ever-so-popular "retard"
Now, what is a retard? According to SCIENCE, a man that is considered mentally retarded is one with an IQ number of 70 or below. Borderline Intellectual Functioning is 71-85, 86-109 is average, and 110 or above is considered superior. This is merely one definition, as there seems to be some debate, but that's beyond the point. Often times, a mentally retarded person suffers from conditions such as Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc; others do not. Regardless of who, this is a problem plaguing the United States as a whole (and likely other countries/nations)
Can you recall learning about segregation? Often times, those of African-American descent were ridiculed for being "N-words". Now, this is different in that it's generally used to describe objects or people who are not literally retarded, similar to the word "gay", but it's disgusting and politically incorrect nonetheless.
Take this into account. You are related to a person who has a low IQ. You are surrounded by people who deem everything that irritates them in a minor way, as in "That's retarded". Does it bother you? Or perhaps you are part of a group that is often discriminated against, one way or another, due to your religion, gender, race, or sexuality. Does that bother you?
Take this all into account. Have your thoughts changed, or do you still have the unnecessary feeling to call all that is merely minor "retarded"? Simply put, think before you speak. You never know who you'll offend.
Retard literally means slow/delayed. It is used in music literally. In human terms it means someone with a very low I.Q, maybe because of a disorder, maybe because they're just idiots.
People ought to take less offence at all this PC rubbish. It's just a waste of time.
Well, in my opinion, calling somebody a retard, is telling them that they are unintelligent. Calling somebody gay however, is saying that being gay is a terrible thing.
Reaccepted. Spoke with 2 HIGHER admins and they agree this blog should be accepted. There is only drama when you want drama. Any further delition of this blog violates the members right to free debate.
And on that note, I will now put this blog back in it's originally intended state.
Funny, how some people even get banned for blogs like this "starting drama" but I wonder why not this one?
You're damn right I defended my friend. I would be defending you too, Kendall, but you are independent, and you seek no help, at least not from me.
To the few contradictory admins: please talk to an overlord if you feel the need to disagree with a fellow admin's final decision again. And let's focus on blogs with less drama for a while.
I happen to live in the North too, bro. Let's not make any hasty guesses here. But, I'm white enough to not be called one, it's just what I hear being shouted around.
Well, I've never heard anyone being called a wetback, mainly because I live in the north, but I understand your point. P.S. I was the one who thought I misspelled chauvinist, not Kendall.
As long as your intelligent about your crap, I respect you.
@Ray: My point is, people take offense too easily. Honestly, you shouldn't make a big deal over being politically correct. Many of us are left "in the dark" when it comes to slurs, you know. For instance, "Wetback". I really don't see anyone here defending others from being called that, no?
Okay, so Malcolm X and MLK jr. were crybabies? Harvey Milk had to use disrespectful names (which makes absolutely no sense if you insulted them)? Goddamn the foolishness.
Nice job bending the story Commanderp. You actually called me a "faggot" because you felt the need to defend your "friends."
I only cussed you out after you asked me to. I had no intention of doing it before that. Also, Jake would be happy to back this story up, unlike yours. So nice try and being an absolute failure, again.
Umm.. if you don't want to be "disrespected" and called a homophobe don't BE a homophobe. That's like the KKK getting upset because people are "disrespecting" them and calling them racists.
And "homophobe" is hardly a "cheap comment" compared to using the offensive-against-homosexuals-word Sorry Commander but that whole comment you made sounded really stupid.
I will say "That's retarded", but, I don't say "gay" or the "N-Word", to be absolutely coi and "proper".
But, as a musician, I'm annoyed when I get a look explaining what a "Ritard" means, in the musical sense.[Commander, you should know, you play guitar, no?] Essentially, t bring a slow-down from the original tempo. Thus, I find this politically correct bullcrap just that: Bullcrap.
No offense, I'll be polite. But, you're just causing more drama bullcrap with this Blog.
OMG SMLLS U BD PRSN BCSE U SAY RTRD OMGOMGOMG DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA
/cutcut
Sadly, people really react that way. You're not a bad person. You speak your mind. And you did it straight forward with no fear of being flamed.
I admire that of you.
I'm not going to lie, I say "that's gay", "that was retarded", and whatnot. It's not that I do it to piss off those people, it's practically because I just want to say it to retaliate against a kill... in a game on the Xbox or on the PC.
I also won't lie about me saying the "N" word. I say it all the freaking time. Again, this is only something I ever say between my friends from high school that I play on Xbox with. We don't mean it to be said in a racist way, more like an insult. I usually keep it within the boundaries of an Xbox Live Party or a small group.
I'm a bad person... aren't I? Don't judge me for it. It is, after all, slang terms now.
Bring it up, Kendall.
True story. So Kendall was cussing me out, calling me every name in the book. Didn't even cringe. I actually thought it funny.
Oh yes, he really let me have it. But I, unlike him, have a backbone, and can take insults like a man, and laugh it away.
So, after everything he has called me, guess who gets in trouble for calling him ONE word?
Yup. I called him that, and BOOM, I'm considered a "Homophobe" because I took defense.
Homophobe... A disrespectful name that gay people give you for speaking your minds. Also, a cheap comeback after you have defeated them in a name calling contest Also gives the false sense of security to the gay person that he has control over you.
Lyvam, you're describing Savants. As in, one who is very intelligent when it comes to a certain area of study. Thing is, only a very, VERY, small percentage of autistics are actual Savants (I think it was in the area of 2-3%). Sure, some may be very smart, but not insanely smart to the point of being considered a Savant.
I doubt most mentally retard people care if they are called "retarded", or if people call others or objects "retarded." You can't really take scientific definitions for everything, I mean in science a disease is anything that causes your body or mind to not function as it should, any way, shape or form. However in reality, a broken arm is not a disease.
Calling someone a retard is basically saying they have a low IQ and are mentally disabled, which would be said in the place of "retard" anyway. Calling people "gay"isn't the same. "gay" isn't synonymous with "stupid, lacking IQ, mentally disabled"
People will continue to provide negative adjectives for society use whenever they find things that they don't like or are "undesirable" so to speak.
@Lucas, you're thinking of "Asperger's syndrome," which I have, and it doesn't officially "make people immature." If your friend is immature, that likely isn't because of AS, more likely it's just his personality.
commander you dont know what goes on inside peoples' minds that have that case. i recently read a book based on a true life story about that. the kid was just as smart as anybody else. just unable to move.
Ray, in lots of cases, sadly, it is.
In worst case scenarios, we are sitting in a wheelchair drooling all day.
In best case scenarios, we are able to master things most people can't at extreme levels without breaking a sweat.
autistic is totally diffirent from mental retardation. people with autism are actually very intelligent. they just specialize in a certain area/subject.
Guys, I'm autistic, and I STILL proudly use the word "retarded". It's really not offensive at all to me. That is why this is a load of attention-seeking (not this blog, I mean what the blog is about).
And now we have struck more political drama. Good job! -thumbs up-
Retard means slow, or delayed. It existed before "mentally retarded" did. If I'm calling somebody retarded I'm calling them slow/delayed, basically, not very smart. When, whoever invented the name "mentally retarded" they meant for it to mean mentally slow/delayed. How is that derogatory/offensive? It's what the word means. Sorry for using proper English.
If you compare this with the N-word which was invented for the sole purpose of demeaning and enslaving a race, then... k.
Mental retardation is NOT a thing to laugh about, and explain the difference between this and the N-word. Their both derogatory words, both used as slang, both taken from their original meaning, etc;
And "stupid" is different in that it's not scientifically accurate.
1. Besides, even though I still consider people like that "mentally retarded", because that is/was the medical term, now don't they want to be called.. "special"? So me saying "retard" shouldn't offend them since it has nothing to do with them anymore, apparently.
2. Saying it doesn't offend anybody, usually people are joking around, usually with friends, when they say it. I highly doubt "special/mentally retarded, etc" people care. It's only the people like "this" who care.
3. The N-word is a totally different situation. And is waaay worse than calling somebody retarded which just equals "stupid" or whatever. And "gay" means homosexual, calling somnething stupid, gay, is like calling gays stupid. Calling somebody stupid/retarded, whatever, is just calling somebody stupid..
This is stupid. Meanings of words change. They always have done and always will. You're like my mother, unable to accept that the world is changing. Live with it.
