This time Taw didn't let go of Fawn's hand. This time there was no time to waste. He poked his head out of the alley. It was clear. They ran on. This was the last bit of their journey. They sprinted towards the Guard's Office. Just then, an Guard opened the large wooden doors and walked out. It was way past curfew. If Taw or Fawn was seen by this Guard, he wouldn't even bother registering them as criminals in the Office. He'd just chuck them straight in a cell and probably throw away the key. Taw forced Fawn back against a building a hoped they wouldn't be seen. The Guard walked away whistling a high pitched tune in the complete opposite direction of their whereabouts. 'There goes his promotion' thought Taw. They waited until the Guard was out of sight, then made a wild dash for the Guard's Office. Before hiding to the side of the steps where they could only be seen if a person really looked, Taw made note of the time show on the large, round, white clock on top of the Office. 11:15. 2 Guards to go, then there would be a break when no Guards would leave. That was their chance. Taw's plan was in action.
Jaen ate his porridge in silence inside the tent. He had put up the tent quickly so that no Guards would find the fire. He had put up the tent, put out the fire and scattered the remaining sticks. He had then poured his dry, unmilky porridge into a bowl and rinsed out the pan. He finished the porridge, opened the tent, rinsed the bowl and put it back into his bag. He sealed the tent and checked his flask. It was almost empty. He promised himself he would refill it in the morning. As Jaen was begining to fall asleep, he heard a rustling noise outside. Jaen shot up into a sitting position, fully awake and alert. Guards didn't make rustling noises. Guards were silent. All Guards were silent, even the town Guards. Jaen racked his brain for anything that he was aware of in this forest that could make that rustling noise.
