Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It was named after the roman god of war, Mars.
Scientists say mars is most likely to have water then any other planet in our solar system. People say they there IS liquid water until mariner 4 took pictures of it. Mars seasons are similar to earth. Mars has half the density of earth. Even though Mars is larger mercury has more density.
Mar’s ground is made up of mostly basalt. Much of the surface is covered by finely grained iron oxide dust. Mars has no proof of magnetic poles but some areas have been magnetized.
Currently liquid cannot exist on mars except at extremely low ground. This is because mars pressure is too low. Even though Mars does not have water it has plenty of ice that can be melted. In fact if it were melted it would cover the entire planet by around 11 meters.
When scientist looked at Martian soil they learned it had minerals needed for life and at its current state could grow vegetables like asparagus. However they tested the soil and it had a chemical that does not let it grow. Scientists are able to remove this chemical but it would be very expensive and time consuming.
Mars has 2 tiny moons named Phobos and Deimos (The sons of Ares. They represent terror and fear.) They orbit very close to the planet/and because of that Phobos will either break up into a ring belt (like one of Uranus moons) or crash into mars in 50 million years. The theory that mars caught them by gravitational pull is the most favored theory.
