gameplay: don't let the 8-bit graphics fool you, this game is amazing. the controls are intuitive, and while gameplay may seem at firts like it would get old: it doesn't. enemy variety is plentiful, and each poses its own challenge (albiet, some less than others). groups of enimies can be overwhelming if you don't attack them with a strategy, adding another level of challenge. I honestly had some difficulty on easy mode! don't take that the wrong way; i would reccomend this to a beginner gamer, i picked up on controls and gameplay in an instant. the addition of easy and hard mode on wii and dsi ware helps for beginner and advanced players. bosses add another variety of combat: each one can be taken on with multiple strategies. the weapons in the game add some level of strategy; having to choose which one to use or level up first adds to the game's experience. the leveling system for weapons may not seem very deep, but feels perfect for this game. 3 levels for each weapon makes losing weapon energy much more punishing, and more motivating to avoid enemies and and enemy shots. the BGMs seem to fit with each level, matching the mood and level of action, calmness, or rush in the level. also, having that element of open world exploration in the game add a sense of freedom, although you may just want to stay to the main path the story puts you on.

all in all, Cave Story is a fantastic sidescroller, now with a "rabid" fan following. the story pulls you in, keeping you coming back. the 3 possible endings add tremendous replay value to an already great game. my score: 10/10 -------------------------------------
