Morning
a poem by Megan R. D.
I woke up early,
which was strange for me.
"I always sleep late,"
I thought wearily.
I couldn't get more sleep,
no matter HOW hard I tried,
so I got out of bed
and peeked outside.
It was the crack of dawn,
and the sky was bright,
from the sun shooting out
golden beams of light.
A few straggling stars
had lingered behind,
not realizing the sun
meant morning time.
"How pretty!" I thought,
wanting to see more,
so I tiptoed downstairs
and slipped out the door.
A songbird sweetly sang
on the faded porch rail,
it seemed to burst with excitement
from it's crest to it's tail.
"It's morning!" It sang,
"Get up! Come see!"
And then, it seemed to smile,
and look straight at me.
By the time I'd get up,
the day would be half gone;
no sunrise or songbirds with their
sweet morining song.
I leaned over the rail,
and away the bird flew,
I looked down and saw roses,
wet with dew.
I touched a red petal,
and a drop slid away.
"You don't see this in the middle of the day!"
I skipped off the porch
and looked at the sky,
I felt so refreshed!
I felt so alive!
As I soaked in the sun,
I couldn't help but smile,
I giggled, "hello morning!
It's been awhile!"
As I ran about,
every turn brought suprise.
The morning was enchantment!
I never realized!
Each day I slept late,
each time I slept in,
I missed watching
one more morning begin.
I missed the opening flowers,
I missed the dew drop jewels,
I missed splashing with morning birds
in nightime rainstorm pools.
I missed the sunrise lightshow,
I missed the morning breeze,
I missed the quiet beauty,
I missed climbing sleeping trees.
But most of all, I missed a morning,
that never would return.
And it took me missing many,
but now, I'd finally learned.
