The Gender Divide- Not Our Best Idea

Savii It's been almost a month since I've last ranted, or Blogged in general. I've been too busy with life, friends, whatnot, I suppose. Oh well.


I'm sure many of you know what I mean by "Gender Divide". In this case, I mean how boys and girls tend to split up and form little friend conglomerates among themselves, but not with each. And more so, how people seem to think that hanging out with someone of the opposite gender immediately means you're 'going out' with them.

Do you remember when you were about 4 or 5 years old? I'm sure if you think back, you'll remember that you had friends that were both boys & girls, but that didn't matter to you. What did was that you had fun. Come age 9 or so, you might start getting nervous when around the opposite gender and/or be driven by peer pressure into hanging out with friends of your particular gender.[Boys w/boys, girls w/ girls, Goombas w/ Goombas...]
Then puberty. I'll save you the pain and not detail.
And finally, age 14 or so. You're now most like hanging out w/ only your gender, save for while dating. But, is this a totally good thing? Wouldn't it be nice to just have a plain, simple, fun friendship with someone that's NOT another guy, or another girl? To be able to hang out w/ the opposite gender, w/out being ridiculed for it.

I remember, back in 2nd grade, I was friends with about 5 girls, and about 6 boys. I got along with all of them. Fast-forward to when I'm 12, and all of a sudden, I'm made fun of by family and friends for befriending a girl. "Ooh, look who has a girlfriend" is not as fun as it sounds. It's annoying and embarrassing, and makes you think that the opposite gender is only for dating, etc...
Am I alone in thinking it would be nice to be able to have friends of both genders, w/out such issues being made over nothing? Think about it.

Ick, having re-read that back to myself, it is clear I am rusty. Thank you for reading, I look forward to any arguments that can be made.

Well, the guys in my family tortue me for having a friend that's a girl, I believe it's because they cannot think of any other way to relate to my life rather than to torment me about relationships. The ridicule comes from people who pay little attention, or care, about your personal life and try to fix their own guilty concious...I try and block them out.

That's very true girls hug and sit on each other's laps and get very close but dude would be thought of as gay if he did this.

I think I hang out more with guys than girls and im a girl myself. I think they are way eaiser to talk to and understand more than some of my friends that are girls. Although theres allways downsides to have many guy friends when your the only girl. =P

Guys really don't have much to say and like to keep feelings and whatnot to themselves while girls like to tell each other everything. Guys are at least one urinal away because of the heavy air about being homosexual and how it make no guy want to be around you.

Though when I first started school, all my friends were boys. [In my school, boys can stay until senior infants, dont know what grade it is, but those boys are all jerks now, no offence.

I agree with you, I have a friend whos a guy and my friends constantly tease me about it. Also, I'm kind of glad I go to an all girls primary. +1 [I dont use the school toilets either, the locks dont work and they stink. >.>]

I completely agree. [blabber]Having a friend of the opposite gender is similar to having a friend of your gender. There's not much of a difference. I also think that girls get along better with boys then with girls and vice versa. Girls don't have to get jealous of their guy friend, if there's nothing to be jealous about. o-o[/blabber]

Nope, I apologize. Haven't had to do PE for 7 years, technically.

Well, really, it depends. Males and Females are built differently physically, so what may be easy for us is harder for them, I think. Don't quote me on that. SO in a way, yes it could be considered sexism, but at the same time, not entirely. I could think of a whole larger-scale example of Sexism, but I've not the heart to Blog it out.

Really, it's all about how people are affected by society as they grow up. As little kids, you'll notice how other kids are different, but it doesn't matter, since you're too young and innocent to the world to feel any differently. Then later, true, it's sort of due to puberty, but also due to the fact that we begin to see the world through eyes that seperate people by characteristics that they often times can't control. This isn't even about only gender either, it also applies to race, financial status, and all that good stuff.

I think puberty (The section you didn't talk about) is the answer.

Honestly, I don't think people are to blame, I believe it is dependent on the person and things that influence them throughout the childhood. It might not be right to say that genders become separated always.. I have friends of both genders and always have through my life.

Reasons for feeling separated or actually being separated from other genders based on ones own ideas, I believe, is directly related to influences like certain gender only schools, or separated eating space.

Does this make any sense?

Not to sound homophobic, but I think urinals are convenient, but weird. I use the stalls. More privacy FTW

we teased my lil bro, but thats just because he always starred at the chearleaders. i have friends that are girls and dont get teased about it. infact, everyone in my school has friends of the oppisite gender

Ugh, I hate how family(well, people in general) loves teasing eachother. Everyone's family is like that, unfortunately.

I remember having 2 best friend who were female in all of elementary and I always got teased about "dating" them. (I was friends with them in separate grades. Never at the same time.)

I eventually didn't care what anyone said and became friends with anyone I wanted. Right now, my bestfriend is a female lol

Back in my kindergarten days, I had plenty of female companions. Actually more than guys.
And even back then, about 100 years ago, I was laughed at for that. But I had enough wisdom to not allow that to get to me.
The way I saw it, if it's such a bad thing, why are they laughing? If it's such a bad thing, why does bring joy to them? Clearly it's a good thing too. Of course I was 6 when I thought that. I've always been somewhat a misfit when it came to wits and reasoning.
But I guess I was cute enough back then to have lots of girlfriends (litteral terms).
