"Rachel had a unique way of tilting her head to the side when she was thinking seriously. And I remember her beautiful smile. Rachel had an inward motivation to accomplish as much as possible. Whenever she sensed an injustice being done to someone, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant it was, indignation rose up within her. She was always ready to stand up for anyone who she felt was mistreated." - Darrell Scott, Rachel's father "People ask me all the time, 'What was Rachel like as a sister?' I always have to say that she was as normal as my other sister.
She was fun, goofy, dramatic... sometimes we got along, sometimes we didn't. Rachel was an easy person to love.
Even though Rachel was my little sister I am the one looking up to her." - Bethanee Scott (McCandless), Rachel's Sister
"We met the first day of class (fourth grade) and she shined back then too. Here's just one quick story:
I remember one Halloween. I wore a Zorro costume to school, and I hated it because my mom made it and I felt pretty dorky. And Rachel came to me and said, 'What's wrong with you, Serge? I love Zorro. I like him. I'd like to be him. You wanna switch costumes with me?' end ever since then, we just had this bond that just grew and grew ever since our first play in fourth grade until our last play that we performed at Columbine." - Sergio Gonzales, Rachel's friend "Rachel was the only one at prom in a black dress. Everyone else was wearing bright colors and pastels, but there she was in black.
No one could have pulled it off more gracefully, and no other color would have looked better on her.
She looked like a movie star arriving for the Oscars. She was like that though, never doing what everyone else was doing just because everyone else was doing it, and never being different just for the sake of being different." - Nick Baumgart, Rachel's friend and prom date
"Rachel lived a life filled with kindness and compassion, and because of it, she's changed the world." - Craig Scott Rachel's Brother
Rachel was awarded the Acts of Kindness Association 2001 National Kindness Award for Student of the Year " For the legacy of kindness left behind by 17-year-old girl, killed during Columbine High School shooting"
"Rachel was the most incredible, passionate person I've ever met in my life. Before she passed away she took my yearbook, and she wrote some stuff in there. One thing she wrote to me was, 'Sarah, don't let your character change color with your environment. Find who you are and let it stay in its true colors." - Sarah Scott Rachel's Cousin
The image to the right is a photograph taken of the back of one of Rachel's old pieces of furniture. Rachel had a habit of writing in unusual places throughout her life.
Here, she traced her hands and wrote: "These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott and will some day touch millions of people's hearts."
