Are You Good With Computers? I Need Your Help....

I don't normally ask for help...but I really don't know what to do. I'm ok with little stuff when it comes to computers, but this is way beyond my knowledge. I know there are many people here, & I also know many of you are very good with computers. So, my issue is, 2 years ago, I bought this crap Toshiba, it came with windows vista home premium. Almost a week ago, I got a message saying that the product key was invalid & I'm at a complete & total loss as to what to do to fix this issue. I can still use the computer, but I can't put a background on my computer & I have to wait 15 seconds before I can sign into my account. I can't buy a new program because I'm just broke. If anyone can help me out & give me some advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

If your laptop was used somehow there is nothing you can do to fix it. If it's new, you probably could contact the company where you got this computer and tell them the model that you have. The company can give you the product key that came on the model somehow. If the sticker of the code was peeled off, like I said you should contact the company about it. If also, you have important files on the laptop like pictures or videos, it may also be good idea to save it to a USB or another way of backing it up. You could also find details of the computer by clicking the Start Button and go to Computer as well but, like I said it could be a good idea to contact the company from where you bought it from.

That sticker is gone....it was peeled off.

I can't risk losing my copy of Sims 3 LN...I don't have the disk & I can't re-download it. It was provided to me as a 1-time download.

I'll have to run it w/o an OS.

Takis, you can just install a OS on top of it. If you do it the right way, then Vista will still be somewhere on your computer, but if you do it the wrong way you can just lose Vista and have only Ubuntu. Astra would want to do it the wrong way.

Yea, I agree with you completely, if only I'd known that BEFORE I spent $800! I've had it factory repaired 4x.

It was the operating system of the computer when I bought it in early April of 2009. I've never had any issues with the OS until now. I never received any type of serial key or anything.

Takis, I know, but I thought she might know what a USB stick is if I explained it. You can't explain it easier than that. And you don't need to be pro to know what that is. I know 8 year olds who use them -.-

Simple, just put the download onto your USB stick and then when you have Ubuntu installed just save the Sims download file on your comp again and run it.

Look on the bottom of your laptop.
You should find some sort of seal with a product key on it.
It will have the Microsoft logo on it.
And if you don't want to use Windows anymore, I would reccomend Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com), and installing WINE (WINE Is Not an Emulator), available at http://www.winehq.org or through the Ubuntu Software Centre.

btw there is a way i think for ubuntu to install sims and play it but i suggest you look up "how to install windows games in ubuntu" or "how to play windows games in ubuntu

hmmm vista is indeed not that great but! if you have the back up dics for the lappy when you first boaught it you could try to reinstall after you back up your personal stuff on a flash drive or disc.
- if you do say get win7 make sure your laptop can be upgraded to win7 or else you wont be able to install win7 easly.
- [another os] ubuntu of course is a good lunix os that is user friendly but you cant use .EXE extentions unless you use WINE [windows .exe emulator pretty much].

i would seguest a reinstall but thats me. my dsi cant display your link sadly but i hope this helps

Pretty much what DripDrop said is the most reasonable option.

I also just remembered you can "Ask for help" useing blogs, and I have been debateing over two Antivirus programs. I'll get to that later. oFTo

Well, you can't really get rid of it (what I know of) but you can easily overwrite it. (Should happen automatically) its perfectly safe, you should backup your computer onto a Blank CD (you can find a tutorial for that) just in case anything goes wrong. You will probably have to reinstall your game.

How do I get rid of Vista? & How do I know it's a safe download? Will I have to reinstall anything (like my sims game)?

You guys obviously don't know anything, because the person who sold the computer to her is obviouy gonna charge her for the product key.
Downwload uTorrent and winRAR, and look for a torrent that gives you the product key(find torrent first)
OR
Install a new OS (recommending Ubuntu) for free off the internet. Get rid of the Windows Vista.

I don't have the money to buy another program, I'm POOR! Vista came pre-istalled so I have no disk, I bought the laptop retail in 2009.

All you need is the key code, ASK the guy who selled you the computer for the code....

This requires no computer knowledge but logic, the alert tells you everything .-.

Try calling a 1800 help number. they will most likly not be American. my mom teaches computers at Jhonson Univesity, so ill ask her in the morning.
if you want a new one from windows. Windows 7 is recomended.

The MESSAGE tells you whats wrong "Product key invalid", just enter the valid product key by pressing the link given to you in the alert, put the key in there and voila.

Easy. o-o

My best guess is that you would need an Operating System Disk.

I would suggest Windows 7, since it's way better than Vista. You can get the OS Disk at your local Best Buy, or even Wal-Mart.

You need the product code of the computer, ask it to the noob who sell you the computer.

By the way,after several months, it dissapears.
