SOPA Blackout and what you can do.

If you haven’t been following this story, here is a quick way to get up to speed.

Basically the bill will give the government more power over the internet in order to fight copyright infringements.

Tonight at midnight many websites including Wikipedia, Reddit, and Daily Paul will be blacked out for 24 hours in protest of this legislation. Life may suck for a day because I enjoy visiting these sites, but I’m completely in agreement that the internet must remain free.

While I could make arguments that SOPA and PIPA will be devastating to the internet as we know it, I want to make the argument that copyright law itself is based on a fallacy.

The idea of intellectual property has been around our entire lives. Its difficult to imagine a world without it. We’re told IP is the motivator for artists and inventors, without it nothing new would ever be created. We grew up being told cheating is wrong, and plagiarism is wrong. Both of which had serious consequences if you were caught. But why is it wrong?

Everyone can agree stealing physical property from someone is morally wrong because this involves taking something away from another. If I steal your television set, you have one less television set and I have one more television set. However, lets say you write a short little poem on a notepad. I see it and say “Wow, I like that poem.” I remember it and go home and write it down in a notebook. Nothing was taken from you. You still have your notepad with the poem written on it and now I have poem written in my notebook as well. People will say “what if I claimed credit for writing the poem.” True, but that is lying, a separate issue from copying. The problem is we think copying=stealing but the truth is copying isn’t stealing. We should approach them differently.

Basically... If SOPA is passed...
You can be fined for having a bucket from KFC in the background. Yep, that means no more pokemon drawings or Facebook pictures.

Yep, mobile site and stoping the loading both work. Its only a couple more hours away, so its not a huge deal though. Hope the message got through, but we'll have to wait and see if it affected anything.

The question was in regards to whom the law was targeting. True it affects many, but I digress.

SOPA and PIPA are just...no. In their current state, they're very vague which only allows more leeway for what can be done with it if actually legalized.

1. Get on a computer

2. Go on the Google homepage (google.com)

3. Click the Google icon. Yes, it has a black board on it.

Finally! Someone posts something about this. This would kill teh internetz as we know it. And very large internet hosting sites. The bill is just written so horribly that if I post a link, a LINK mind you, to a Futurama episode online, Hull and whoever hosts him get sued by the government. I hadn't kept up with the SOPA legislation until a few days ago when I started reading some of the details on it. I hear bickering between people on the left and right of the political spectrum about who is to blame. The problem is that people are very misguided here. The political spectrum is multidimensional. Think of upward as being authoritarianism and downward as being individualism. SOPA is upward, meaning it places more control into the hands of the government and corporations and pulls it from the opposing side, which is the morality of the individual's decisions. Thus, you will see support from socialists and progressives (up, left) and from fascists and corporatists (up, right), but opposition will come from libertarians (down, right) and anarchists (down, left).

I tend to believe that the US Federal Government has gained too much power, especially in the executive branch. The Department of Homeland Security has already tried to shut down websites without due process of law. SOPA will just allow more of this. Theft and piracy are already addressed in numerous laws, as laid out in the US Constitution, article 1, section 8. An overbearing law like SOPA is not needed.

Actually, he lives in Califonia. I haven't stalked him long enough to get his exact location. ABC is aired all over the USA, hence the accronym American Broadcasting Company.

SOPA(thetic) already was vetoed according to dad. Shocking enough, by Obama himself.

But that's just dad. He's only a nuclear engineer for aerospace technologies. He's only right 0.9% of the time.

Now then, I do agree with this. And I have read about it this morning, but I think they are a little late.
But don't fret. SOPA(thetic) will be avenged!

Btw, I read Wikipedia every day. Tomorrow won't be an easy day >_>

Screw the rest of the world.

The people of the USA don't need the World Wide Web--we could just make a private Intranet that only we have access to. Google, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia...They're all in the USA I think...
We could also have access to a world wide web, but not before knowing the risks.

Glad you made this blog.

I live in Brazil but this will surely affect the WHOLE WORLD, and i don't want that to happen, its nonsense! If these things get accepted, the tragedy will be HUGE. Imagine the riots of people going out in the streets, Facebook, Twitter, Google, Wikipedia DOWN, internet freedom over?! Man, its gonna be the apocalypse.

And they are COMPLETELY OVERREACTING with "Illegal" downloads of mp3, many artists say when new musics get downloaded a lot they also get sales up, its a mean for people to try out something without expending any money and then buy the whole stuff, many artists are comfortable with free downloads, ITS BEEN PROVEN.

I don't have a job, but i'm sure when i get one i'll buy all the CD's of these amazing albums i have on my mp3 list, IF IT WASN'T THIS, I WOULD NEVER HAVE MET THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. Ask me, why will i buy the CDs if i already have the musics? to get my own high quality files of course!!! These "free" ones are just crappy samples : )


I think piracy CAN be fight, but no in the way SOPA and PIPA is pretending to.


If this gets accepted I HOPE IT BECOMES THE APOCALYPSE So your government realizes the CRAP they have done.

ABC is a network that airs television shows. I get it here (in Illinois). It's almost always on Channel 3.

I really don't have a fear of this new bill. If anything, the government is actually getting off their bums and doing something. Problem is, they're doing the wrong thing.

They should focus more on specific issues instead of pulling out something that covers a wide area. It'll create more conflict than stop it.
