This topic has been lurking in the back of my mind for quite awhile. It has sparked plenty of faint emotions within me. I've never written a blog like this before, but I've decided to write this one because this topic is one that means a lot to me, and I go by the rule of writting what is important to me. So I'm writting this time about racism.
My best friend asked me to be his date to his school's banquet. My grandma wants pictures when we go. Not that I care about what she'll say, but she'll have plenty to talk about when she sees my friend is African-American. And nothing good, let me assure you.
I was watching a special on the History Channel about the Ku Klux Klan. How their organization evolved into a movement to terrorize blacks by imtimidating them and performing voilent acts of racism against them. I almost cried watching it.
I often make silly little remarks to my African-American friend that contain faint racism. He retorts by saying something about how pale I am. I've assured him I mean nothing at all by my remarks, and if he would like, I can stop if I'm hurting him deep down. He's told me that he knows I don't mean the remarks seriously, and it's fine since he always gets back at me. But his grandmother who is still alive has lived to have sticks and stones thrown at her. Not everyone is joking when they make a rasist remark.
So why? Why all the hating against blacks? First, here's a little history:
Wikipedia defines African Americans (which is the general term I'm using to refer to black) as the following- "citizens or residents of the United States who have at least partial ancestry from any of the native populations of Sub-Saharan Africa.[4] Most African Americans are of West and Central African descent and are descendants of enslaved Africans within the boundaries of the present United States."
The first African slaves arrived in present-day America in 1526. As English settlers died from harsh conditions, more and more Africans were brought to American soil to work as laborers. By the 1640s and 1650s, several African families owned farms around Jamestown, Virignia, and some became wealthy by colonial standards.
A race-based slave system did not fully develop until the 18th century. By 1860, there were 3.5 million enslaved African Americans in the United States due to the Atlantic slave trade, and another 500,000 African Americans lived free across the country.In 1863, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation declared that all slaves in states which had seceded from the Union were free.
Discrimination was at an all time high for blacks, and the Civil Rights movement of 1954 was aimed at abolishing discrimination of blacks.
Blacks were the target of plenty of discrimination in American history. They wouldn't be allowed to enter certain public establishments becuase of the circulating rasism. They were mocked, called names, put down, shunned, the targets of voilent acts, and most of all, not given equal rights.
There are still present-day instances of rasism. Wikipedia states, "Researchers Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan, at the University of Chicago and MIT found in a 2004 study that there was widespread discrimination in the workplace against job applicants whose names were merely perceived as "sounding black". These applicants were 50% less likely than candidates perceived as having "white-sounding names" to receive callbacks for interviews. Devah Pager, a sociologist at Princeton University, sent matched pairs of applicants to apply for jobs in Milwaukee and New York City, finding that black applicants received callbacks or job offers at half the rate of equally qualified whites.[26][27] In contrast, institutions and courts have upheld discrimination against whites when it is done to promote a diverse work or educational environment, even when it was shown to be to the detriment of qualified applicants.[28][29] The researchers view these results as strong evidence of unconscious biases rooted in the United States' long history of discrimination (i.e. Jim Crow laws, etc.)[3
I all it ridiculous. And I'm not going to assume everyone who reads this agrees. I know there are plenty of people in America who still cling to the belief that whites are the superior race.
I am a Christian. I believe all men are created equal. But even if you aren't a Christian (and if you aren't then I understand you won't understand my view point since I am going off the Bible), it's just plain common sense all men are created equal. Say there was a superior race. What makes whites that particular race? What's to say blacks aren't? So what if they're skin is a different color, to put it quite honestly, Americans have made their past hell, and some still do.
Discrimination against blacks is still alive today. And it needs to stop. We are not better than they are. So all you who believe that whites are superior to blacks, you are wrong.
