I raise my eyebrows. I never would have thought my name would be picked in the Reaping. I only have my name in their about four times. Of course, anything can happen. District 12 managed to to prove that last year when Primrose Everdeen was Reaped, and she had only ONE slip with her name in the Death Bowl. Death Bowl, District 13's name for the glass bowls they draw out names out of, seeing as we're an outlying District with little to no chance of winning. Wait... winning is going to be a lot harder this year won't it? Because this year is the third Quarter Quell. This year's Quell tragity happens to be a particarly evil one. President Snow had said "For the third Quarter Quell, no tributes older than the age of 15 will be allowed to be choosen."
Actualy, if you think about it, this year might actualy be easier for me than it would have been on a typical year, because I won't be up against eighteen-year-olds with swords, so I guess I should be thankful for being reaped on the third Quarter Quell. Not like it would have mattered, because my dad is the mayor, so my family is somewhat rich, therefore I have an advantage. Suddenly I'm being pushed. Than I realize I must have gone into a thoughtful daze again. So I head up the stairs, and stand beside our announcer, Evan. It's strange, no one knows his last name, and he refuses to tell anyone. Some say he changed his name to something else, and his last name is supposedly rebellious, and he's just waiting for the right time to come forth. But, until a legible answer comes forth, the mystery of Evan's last name shall remain.
Next thing I know I'm being shooved again, towards the Justice Building. Right, because we see our families for the last time and are sent off to be pointlessly trained for our entertaining deaths. My sister comes balling her eyes out, and I perform a failed attempt to calm her down. Than my mother and finaly my father, who's the only one who beleives in me. My mother and sister beleive I'm just going to die, like so many other people in District 13 believe. But I'm not willing to let that happen. I promise that I'll return in glory, but they don't believe one bit of it. I board the train with a face full of cameras. Yes, lets show off our tributes for the year's Hunger Games. The train ride is uneventful, no help at all from a mentor, because no one in District 13 has ever won the Hunger Games.
I get to training, the stations I stick to are the camouflage and fire lighting stations. I also get a feel for their light projectiles. Trying things I've never seen before. I've heard of throwing stars, but never seen one. I try it out, and it's quite easy, all you really need to kill with it is good aim. The knife took a little more skill. Then I see an axe, a small one. It's quite intriguing. I pick it up, and throw it at a random target. The target happens to be a punching bag across the room. I didn't realize someone was using it until I hear a shriek of surprize. I instantly feel guilty, than feel everyone's eyes burning into me. I look at them, their eyes are all filled with shock and disbelief. At first I'm confused, than I realize why. I'm from District 13, And outlying district's tributes are almost never skillful in anything. Then it comes, the assessment. The day we show off our skills to the Gamemakers. I take a look around. I think of throwing the mini axe again, than I spot something else. It's quite peculiar. Looks kind of like a double knife. Kind of like a throwing star, but something about it intrigues me. Than I notice that it's very jagged. It almost looks like its whole purpose is to tear flesh. I throw it at a dummy. It sticks. A little too much, because I can't get it out of the dummy. I'm pulling on it as hard as I can, but it won't budge. I can feel the Gamemakers staring at me, and hear them chuckling. Than it finaly comes free. I'm unprepared for it, and end up flying across the room with the knife in my hand. Now they're laughing their heads off. So, I take my knife and huck it as hard as I can at another dummy, but it doesn't stick. Did I miss? There's a hole, but I can't see the knife. I go take a closer look, amd what I find shocks me beyond belief. It went straight through the dummy! Wow! That blade is like... multipurpose or something! Sharp when you need it to be, jagged as a saw when using it other wise. I look around for it to take a closer inspection. It appears to be serated on one side, and very sharp on the other. Then my hand slips over the sharp blade. I immediately let go of it, but even though I let go of it, it's still on my hand. What the heck? The handle has slid over the sharp blade. That's when I get the idea to try it's real purpose. I go up to a thick steel cable and slash at it. It goes right through it. Than one of the Gamemakers talks to me. "Why don't you try the one beside where you got that one?" OK. Why not? I go over, and I don't see any knife. All I see is a long thin sword.
