Sony's conference is by far one of the nicest conferences, and the longest one. It started with a video show of many games in the big screen, and an incredible sound work, leaving the expectation of good things to come, and that taste of wanting to see more.
The conference had a little of everything, they showed a live demo of Assassins Creed III naval battle system, showed a live demo of the new Smash Brother's like Sony game, Playstation All Stars, and showed it would allow cross-play between the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita, revealing in the process the simultaneous release of the game for both systems.
It was announced various video services would come to the Playstation Vita, Youtubu, Hulu and Netflix among them. There was also a talk about the Playstation Network, and improvements of the vip service, which you can get by paying a small yearly fee. Everyone who attended the event got giveaway codes for 1 year of free PSN+.
A year ago, Sony said the Call of Duty franchise was coming to the Playstation Vita, they re-confirmed and showed the new title's logo, its a Black Ops II game, but it will have a separated story from the home consoles version, much like the DS Call of Duty games, nothing besides that was shown. An Assassin's Creed game will also be coming to the Playstation Vita, but will also be different from the console's version, the main character is a female Assassin, some gameplay of the game was shown.
But the official Star of the show was the new IP, The Last of Us. They showed everyone a 7 minutes long gameplay trailer, which looked more like a cinematographic performance than a game! It was the first time they revealed actual gameplay, and the battle system. Although at first glance it may look like Uncharted games, it is apparently very different from it, and features an incredibly realistic battle mechanic and environments, and the surroundings are gorgeous.
In this game you are in the flesh of a survivor living in a post-apocalyptic world, which had civilizations destroyed by a deadly and contagious fungus, his name is Joel, and your partner is a young teenager, Ellie.
You encounter various survivors trough the game, they seem to be hostile most of the time, but there are also infected humans that weren't present in the gameplay demo, they are very aggressive but not much is known about the them, what they do, or how they actually look, although its clear by the quick glances that the human aspects are conserved.
The battle system left clear that ammo is scarce in this game, which implies it will have some very present survival horror elements. The confrontation, unlike many games, leaves the player aware of how decadent and hard is to take another human's life, in this game one doesn't simply hit and instantly kill another person, body to body confrontation is terribly realistic. All you do to your enemies, apply to you. If you get shot your life bar will decrease by 25%, or more depending of where it hits and what kind of weapon is used.
The end of the trailer was marked by a very emotional kill scene. After dominating the hostile survivor, it drops in the ground and begs for his life as you decide whether to shot or spare him. It was not scripted, that was the actual gameplay, dynamic, realistic, and terrifying. That is taking cinematic gameplay to a whole new level, to a dynamically superior level, where the game doesn't tell you what to do or imply you to do, you just do it, and all around you acts independently, without linear scripting. A truly impressive and ambitious production.
Sony's conference did impress, but had several minutes out of focus, giving too much attention to some games that didn't deserve that much on a yearly event, and dedicating almost 30% of its presentation to Playstation Move, which left fans truly unhappy.
