I think that it loads it all in one file. Swapnotes are all in one folder, so I'm assuming that they're all loaded in RAM. I know this because I was looking through my 3DS folder on my computer, and I found this folder with over 2000 (or something) files in it, I assumed it was Swapnote. I also checked with a friend who had only 15 Swapnotes on his 3DS, and it was lightning fast to mark as read (estimating about 5 seconds!) I made him take out the SD Card, it was the original 2GB one that came with the system. Therefore, I conclude that the capacity does make an impact, and so does the amount of notes saved, since it loads all in RAM (I think). Am I a highly trained scientist yet?

Toshiba class-4 16GB SDHC card, 1.91GB in use of 14.8GB. This is after deleting around 1GB of videos and images, which makes no different for NAND flash technology. Be aware that the class rating is a rating of speed. Most SDHC cards sold at retail are class-4, but the ratings can go as high as 10.

I prefer neatness so I always delete notes after I no longer need them, but I save all the special notes and Nikki's tutorials.

I've cleared out most of my friend list because of SwapNote spam.

I'd check my messages every day until I bought a 16GB SDHC card. Saving SwapNote changes went from a couple seconds to a minute (I actually timed it.). Now, I have to spend 3 hours of my life deleting spam, unless I don't mind losing everything I've unlocked! If you get a new SDHC card, make sure ts better than a Class-4.

Add these things:

If you get 15-20 new notes, you may have more waiting. Press HOME and suspend the software, then resume it again. If you are in the main Swapnote menu, the "Downloading new notes..." will appear once again after you resume it. If you get 15-20 again, repeat the process until you have none left. You have to do this because Swapnotes are downloaded in batches, so just because you download 1, you still may have more.

Also a tip: when downloading new notes, close your system. It will download faster.

Correction: Where you put "Nintendo 3DS", before it add "Data Management"

Also...

Someone should tell Nintendo to freaking add a delete multiple button to Swapnote in an updated version, so you don't have to delete the extra data AND your stationery.
