I have loved text-based games ever since I found the Choice game, "The Captives of Witch Hill." Then I found a mmorpg choice game (that works on the 3ds browser) called, "The Legend of the Green Dragon" which I may review sometime in the future. Then I found a text-based mmorpg called "Achaea" and signed on thinking it would be a simple little text game... I WAS SO WRONG. I will be reviewing and explaining my first moments in the game, as well as some other things.
After you make your account and log on the first time, you go to a character creation page. It has your name, gender, and most importantly, race. There are 15 races to choose from. From humans, to dwarfs, to elfs, to harpy lady looking things but they aren't harpys, to sirens, you name it. No matter your intrest, you're sure to find a race that you like. Me? I chose the frog people. I forget the name, but they are probably the best race. Then, something amazing happened... I did not choose a race! I whent directly to the game. At first, the game was progressing to fast, it put new lines on the screen each second. I did not know that I was in the tutorial area and could slowdown the text, so I reloaded the page thinking that I could start over for some reason and, an old lady was talking to me! I had my character say his name, and proceeded on with the newbie area. Now, please note that you can slowdown text by typing SPEED DOWN and speed up text by useing SPEED UP. I proceeded on with the newbie area, now with text as slow as it would allow, and finally finished it.
Now, another thing to note, this game has a hint system. By typing HELP you will get a hint. Which is completely pointless because the NPCs of the newbie area TELL YOU what to type, and in case you are dumb or can't read, the game tells you again by useing the HELP command on itself... EVERY DAMN SECOND! By the time I'm done typing what I needed to type, the HELP command spammed itself at least three times. Then I FINALLY finished the newbie area, so I typed SLOWDOWN, just to make sure... it can only be used in the newbie area. Then, I wondered to myself, What the hell am I supposed to do? Well, I typed HELP, just to find out that the hint function is ALSO only allowed in the newbie area...
Great job game, the first time a player can actually use the hint function you take it away. So I looked at the website for help. THERE IS A NEWBIE NETWORK! Yay! As well as one for your class, house, and city (all of which you pick after newbie area combletion). By typing NEWBIEON you turn on the newbie channel CYON for city, and so on. Though, these are all on by default... I think, I would still turn all of them on just in case... Infact, I did, as well as ask for help on the newbie channel. A nice guy named ROMEO replied and helped. ROMEO helped me a lot actually, he gave links to help pages, told me what I should do, and I will most likely rely on his help a lot more, even after my newbie days. But there isn't just ROMEO, there is also JULIET that you can rely on, as well as countless denizens. Romeo and Juliet are guides, you could say that they are the equivilant of the secretaries here. Imagine, admins, having to answer a bunch of "What do I do" questions for every newbie to make an account. This is probably one of the reasons why the house system exists, so you can ask the people in your house questions, as well as the denizens, there is a lot of those. There are 17 classes, a bunch of cities you can choose from and a ton of houses, though each house has it's own set of prerequisets, one of which is the class.
One thing you should remember is that help pages are your friends in this game. Though there is a tutorial it litterally tells you what to do, then pushes you out the door and says, "Don't come back." Leaving you more confused then my older brother coming out of highschool. Now, although what I have documented so far seems negative, it has a ton of positives. The combat is intense, including the newbie area boss, in which you could die. The only thing infuriating about combat is killing rats. They move in and out of areas so fast that you need to turn on your ability to see to them. Moving is simpler then you might think, considering on the right hand side of the screen you can turn on a map. The game gives you exsits for each room, to move you simply type N, E, S, W, NE, SE, SW, or NW. You can also use the map as a guide, which makes finding your way easy.
I can tell that the developers did their best to make the game as easy to understand as they can. If you have any questions ask in the comments, and I will eventually answer. You can also visit the site. Since I'm on 3ds I won't put links up now, but I will soon. Untill then, google it.
