I recently got the Super Mario Galaxy games, which to this date, completes my collection of having all of the star-collecing type 3D Mario platformers. This is my list of favorites in order and why.

5. Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64 revolutionized gaming, jumping from 2D platforming to fully explorable 3D. It's got a sweet hub world, Peach's castle. Also quite unique is the design of jumping onto paintings which will take you to new worlds. It has some challenging stars in it, and I like that the only hints you'll get for each star is the name itself. There's no cinematic pan of the course, showing the objective. It gives players more to figure out. The music is great and courses vary quite a bit. However, considering this game has been remade and improved greatly for the DS, this is probably number five on the list.

4. Super Mario 64 DS
I got this game with my Nintendo DS (Almost ten years ago ), and having played through the original, it was pretty exciting to see Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi fully playable. If you were interested in the Luigi rumors in SM64, this may have excited you as well. In my opinion, this game is actually better than the original, and I'm sure some gamers would disagree. But there are quite a few positives, and this game is actually one of the best game remakes ever. Not only did it bring back the original elements with better graphics and new control options, it added new characters, more stars, more areas and more modes. Some people didn't like the controls because it was basically either the four-button control pad or the touch screen. I didn't really think it was a problem; I don't think I even noticed any control issue on the first playthrough. And if you've got a 3DS, the circle pad may make you happy.

3. Super Mario Sunshine
Some gamers would think this is a bad Mario game. But, like Super Mario Bros. 2, it's different but has influenced the Mario series quite a bit. The hub world, Delfino Plaza, is my favorite of any of these games. Back when I first played this, I thought the water effects were amazing, and they still impress today. Being able to look at a far distance from a course and seeing other areas accessible in the game is a nice touch as well. It's nice to see some connection between areas. I really like the tropical setting of the game. The areas are fairly large and it's a lot of fun to explore tropical regions.

2. Super Mario Galaxy
Many of the areas in this game have fewer huge areas to explore, and have small planets to fly to. The courses are quite varied, but some are sort of odd. Stars aren't really challenging to figure out, since a lot are fairly linear, meaning there isn't a lot of exploration necessary to get a star. This doesn't have the best hub world, but it works. It could have been inside like a high-tech space station though. There are some pretty awesome boss battles in this adventure too. Music is great and some nice remixes.

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
Despite some things I'm not a huge fan of, such as the world map, I think this game is indeed my favorite of these five. I enjoy big courses and a fairly large hub world to play around in, and this doesn't really have the hub. There are some fantastic courses in this game though, and there are quite a few large ones as well. Nintendo did some sweet nostalgia stuff such as There were also some pretty awesome courses that, in my opinion, were better than some of the ones in the previous title. And of course the addition of Yoshi makes it even better. He's cool and is a dinosaur.
