Oh, Ghosts. They sure are a wierd race, if you want to refer them as one. Ghosts are born when people die and have something he or she absolutely has to do. So, if you died and didn't finish your chores, chances are you won't become a ghost. These goals can be made split second before death, but must be completely sincere when made. And, no, making the spilt second decision that you wanted to finish your chores won't increase chances of becoming a Ghost.
When Ghosts die, they don't have a lot of power over real objects. They cant affect or be effected by physical objects or forces. But, Ghosts can be harmed by magical forces. When a Ghost dies a second time, the Ghost immediatly "passes on." They can also choose who may see or not see them, and who may hear or not hear them.
Ghost's have a small variety of defensive magical powers, but are extremely skilled at them. And this ain't no protego crap from Harry Potter, these magical shields can protect from almost any type of magical abilities. However, these magical shields can only protect from one element of magic. A Ghosts electrical shield can only protect from electrical magic, a fire shield can protect from fire magic, and so forth. Ghost's do not have any magic that can hurt anything.
Ghost's also have the ability to choose a "host" to help them with this goal. This process is called "possessing." When a Ghost possesses a person, that person may become obsessed with doing the goal that the Ghost would like to accomplish. In an unconsious state, a possessed being can be controlled by the Ghost possessing him. The Ghost would probably proceed to do whatever it needed to do to pass on.
Passing on is when a Ghost has fulfilled whatever he or she needed to do, and then makes their way to Heaven or Hell. The possessed person may or may not remember the Ghost that possessed them and all events after being possessed, depending on whether or not the Ghost want's him or her to remember.
