Sci-fi movies. What's there not to love? The perfect blend between drama, realism, and non-realism. Sci-Fi movies are quite interesting, because, let's face it. Inputting new concepts into real life can have pretty unique results. Usually, these types of movies turn out to be pretty memorable, and quite highly preferred. Now, let's get into the review of Alien 3. An obvious warning, there will be spoilers in the review.
The movie starts out with a normal Sci-Fi intro. The credits start, showing few clips in between. It's bothersome in the beginning of the movie, but it's not difficult for us to follow. It doesn't explain much, but it hands the gist to the viewer, and hands it to us quite well. It allows us to pick up on the storyline, like a bit of a preview.
From what the clips show, we have the subjects in the movie, the protagonist, Ripley. She's a woman, in one of the capsules displaying the characters, before much of the plot begins. Accompanying her, are the daughter, and an android, named bishop. After we see this, we see the capsule containing them launching them off of a ship, onto a nearby planet. The CGI effects are alright, but the lighting effects with the planet are excellent. We then get into the story, where a few men find the crashed capsule, and find these people. The daughter is reported to be dead, and the android was also nonfunctional. The protagonist, Ripley, was the only one who survived the crash.
The men who find her bring her to safety, and the next shot begins with her laying in a hospital bed. She's unconscious at the moment, while another character, forgot the name, injects her with a clear fluid. She wakes up before he injects her, and he then injects her, while she's in a panicked state. Then, they make small talk, and Ripley decides that she wants to see the others. The Doctor (His nickname for now) decides to take her to see the people she wants. She finds her daughter, and requests an autopsy, believing that a virus has infected her. The doctor, does as she says. Suddenly, Ripley obtains the title of "Lieutenant".
After a little more screenplay, that I can't remember for some reason, she goes on to the cafeteria. She gets her food, and the people with her aren't particularly fond of her. They aren't exactly the most tolerant of women. She sits next to them, while they're making fun of her. This shows her character development.
Eventually, one of the crew members finds something on the floor while cleaning an area of the ship. He decides to touch it, and it turns out to be gooey. He picks it up, finding a skin-like substance. He then finds an alien, and gets startled, tumbling into the rotating fan nearby.
The crew investigates this issue, and the commander, who I forgot to mention, whoops, becomes suspicious, about the issue.
Next, three crewmembers are assigned to search the air ducts. They notice a breeze, blowing out the candles to mark where they were. One crew member is assigned to relight the candles after they're blown out. He goes to relight the candles, when he's attacked by the alien. The crewmembers hear his screaming, and they go after to him, and they see the alien. Again, they run away screaming, even though it's not really paying attention to them. They run away, screaming, as if loud volume helps get them to safety. They calm down, and then the alien catches one of them, when he eats one of the men, splattering blood on the other man's face.
The man who survived goes insane. He describes the creature as a dragon, and nobody believes him. They suspect him of a murder. One of the crewmembers asks him what happens, and he tells the truth. He claims the suspect has never lied to him before. After the commander accuses him, Lieutenant Ripley steps in, to talk the truth into everyone.
Later, Ripley visits The Doctor again, in the same room as the suspect. The suspect is telling her about it, how it's going to kill her, and how everyone's going to die. The doctor closes off the gates, and starts to inject her with more fluid, which he explains is morphine, a painkiller. Just as he is about to do this, the alien approaches, killing him before he can do this. The woman backs up into a corner, while the suspect has a panic attack. The alien gets up close to her, as if he's going to attack her. The alien decides to spare her, and we go to the next shot.
The commander explains what's going on to the crewmembers, and that they're required to organize a search party. While he's explaining this, the Alien comes out, from a broken tile in the ceiling, and eats the commander right there, in front of everyone.
Basically, this is where the major plots goes into place. The crewmembers are panicking, and they don't know what to do about the alien. Remember Ripley? She's being blamed, and ridiculed about this, when one crewmember decides to go up to her, and yell at her, quite close to her face, while she remains extremely calm.
They try to decide who's a commander, and they theorize how to kill the alien. They go through ideas, until she turns out to the main theorist. Unfourtanetly, none of her ideas work, and she's out of ideas. Most of the equipment doesn't work. Eventually, they find out there's a place where they can trap anything inside, which gives Ripley an idea. She comes up with a plan to kill the alien, having people lure the alien into a trap, where they drench it with hot iron.
The main character, Ripley, also decides to get a CAT scan, from a scanner, to see if she has an alien inside her. It turns out that she has an alien inside of her, results shown from the scan. Then, she loses some sanity, and asks for another crewmember to kill her, preventing the spread and reproduction of aliens. The other crewmember won't do it.
Next, they execute the plan. They allow the alien to chase them, trapping it behind doors. Some of the crewmembers die, but the plan finally succeeds. All is good, except for one thing..
The alien jumps out of the hot lava, seemingly unaffected. The alien chases Ripley up a set of pipes, until she turns on the sprinklers, drenching the alien and cooling it off. This turns out to kill the alien. The rescue team now arrives, trying to get Ripley operated on, to kill the alien. Ripley doesn't trust them, and she doesn't allow them to perform surgery on her. Instead, she decides to commit suicide, preventing the spread of the Aliens. She falls back into a vat of, what appears to be, lava. Then, the movie ends with her falling into the lava.
Finally, if anyone actually had the patience to read through all of that, here's the summary.
What did I think about the movie? First, there's a few things I want to address.
The CGI effects are good, and they're bad. What I mean is, some parts of the CGI are good, some are bad. The alien's CGI is good in close up shots, pretty much real life looking. Far shots, and it doesn't look so well. Inconsitent, but doesn't take from the experience.
What did I think? I'll finally answer that. I thought the movie was excellent. The plot was executed perfectly, allowing the viewer to slowly ease into what's going on, until the plot develops. None of the movie is boring, it's always interesting. The character development is excellent. Sure, we don't see what caused Ripley's development, but it still was executed very well. It's also quite emotional at some points. The other crew members also develop a lot, and they turn out to be great people, cooperating really well. The only bad thing about the movie is some CGI shots. But, they don't take from the experience, like I said. The acting was excellent, and the plot was pretty well-defined, even if it can't be put into words.
Who would I recommend this movie to? Anyone who wants to see a well-executed movie. This movie was excellent, and I really enjoyed it. A bit of a forewarning, there's a lot of F-bombs throughout the movie. The movie got a rating of R, but there's nothing really inappropriate about this movie, besides for constant swearing at some segments.
This review took me a little bit less time to type. Thanks for reading, to anyone who read this. I appreciate all feedback, and I'd love to hear your opinion. Requests are welcome, and thanks to anyone who read this. I know, I'm repeating. Hope you liked my review.
