Was it a good idea for Brazil to choose to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup?
I personally think it was a bad idea for the country. It already has poor economy, and now they have spent millions of dollars in building and renovating new pitches/fields just for the tournament.
Background Information
The FIFA World Cup is an international soccer/ football tournament consisting of 32 teams. This tournament is held every four years, in different countries. The 2006 tournament being held in Germany, the 2010 tournament being held in South Africa, and the 2014 tournament held in Brazil.
The Problem
Brazil is a country known for the economic issues. Although, after the 2013 Confederations Cup (kind of like a dress rehearsal to the World Cup) that was held in Brazil, many people think that they are ready. But are they?
Brazil is a country known for soccer. They worship it. They are the most successful country to ever play the sport, having won 5 World Cups. Inside each stadium seems like a party, but outside is like war.
Protests are everywhere. The citizens of the country, soccer fans or not, all protest against holding the FIFA World Cup. Of course, it's too late to change anything, but these people at least want to get the word to the government that the money could've been spent elsewhere.
There are also still SIX stadiums that need to be completed as of December this year. The FIFA's Secretary General himself has said that there would be no compromise if they were not completed by then. Six stadiums have been done, and they have already gone over the budget.
Many people know that the crime rate in Brazil is high, so how safe will it be for the tourists and citizens, in an unwelcoming environment? These are all things that should've been considered before Brazil bid for the 2014 World Cup spot.
Besides, even if Brazil won the 2013 Confederations Cup at home, the chances of Brazil winning the World Cup are at an all-time low. Just before the Confederations Cup, Brazil were ranked 22nd in the World, the lowest the country has EVER been. After the Confederations Cup, and with great recent performances, they have managed to pull themselves back up and into the 8th spot.
Even with this, the current Brazilian team has an average age of about 24,and with past legends like Ronaldinho and Kaka not being selected anymore, it will be up to youngsters like Neymar and Oscar to hold the pressure of winning the World Cup for their country and silencing all the doubts.
Of course, I definitely don't want them to win.
Germany has it this year!
Which country do you support?
Fun Fact
