So... my birthday was last weekend, and Skunkman surprised me with a copy of Pokemon Y. I just wanted to share a little bit about myself and Pokemon, which puts me square in the middle of Dr. Seuss's book Green Eggs and Ham.
Let me start off by saying that I saw Disney's The Little Mermaid at the cinema when I was in 3rd grade and was surprised when another guy in my class actually admitted seeing such a "girly" movie like that. (Though, I secretly had the catchy song "Under the Sea" looping through my head, and I didn't hate it one bit.) See, when you are school aged, you can be very self-conscious about what those around you think.
Later, in my college years, I had an elderly friend who was part of the barbershop quartet. The songs the quartet would sing were fun. I enjoyed them. The harmony and the catchy tunes were entertaining. Around that time, I started hearing boy bands on the radio and initially thought they were the dumbest things ever. Then, I noticed that some of their songs sounded like that barbershop style, so I got a few of their CDs. I had stuff by Boyz II Men, All 4 One, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, 98 Degrees, and whatever the names of all the other clones were. Most of their songs were junk, but as someone who was studying recording arts in college, I enjoyed just listening to the harmony of the voices (and ignored the atrocious and whiny lyrics and pre-programmed keyboard beats). When I joked around about liking some of the songs with some friends, almost all of them admitted that they liked the same songs. The thing about growing up is that you quit caring what other people think about you, and you become your own person.
Fast forward to this past weekend. I had the preconceived notion that Pokemon games were for kids. I'd been exposed to side games like Pokemon Snap and Hey You Pikachu. They seemed targeted toward elementary school age. Thus, I never tried the RPGs. I didn't want the green eggs and ham. Yet, when I tried it last weekend, I had a great deal of fun! The green eggs and ham known as Pokemon Y may not have the greatest storyline, but it is as enjoyable as any old school Final Fantasy or Earthbound. It brings back memories of when video games were just fun! What ever happened to those days?
My friend bought the game after waiting 48 hours outside for it, and he's had it a week now and he's been playing it maybe 16/7 with breaks for sleep. It's scary- I might never beat his team once I get the game! D:
I was the first person in a town of 3000 - 4000 people to own Pokemon X. Yeah, epic title that is to tell people of. I really like the game, it's a lot more involved the any Pokemon game I've played. But of course, coming from Platinum and Pearl, never touching B/W or B2/W2 or any other game, that's not saying much. Haven't gotten the chance to try any of the previous Pokemon games yet.
Black and White, and Black 2 and White 2 had the best story. But I guess very much of it went over the head of the Pokemon fanbase.
I'm kind of hoping for a Black 3 and White 3, or maybe a Gray remade in the X and Y style. All of the big city areas in Unova would look so good if done in 3D.
But there are still loose ends. Reshiram and Zekrom were supposed to be one Pokemon. By fusing with Kyurem, they become slightly more complete. But never do we see the original Pokemon that all three fused would be.
Not to mention the complete character development for all of your rivals and such. We see them growing up, but they still seem like they're growing.
But yeah, Black and White. They had rivals that were more than just fat kids that liked to dance.
Not that there is anything wrong with dancing fat kids.
Nice blog. I like Pokemon (obviously), but it's something that is generally looked at as a kids game.
Have you ever tried Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games? I really liked the story lines on those games, and I thought they were a bunch of fun. Just a recommendation.
My brother is 20 yrs old and has a Pikachu onesie, and the other day he went to his friends house for a party wearing it, but he took the train going there xD. You wouldn't belive how many stares he got.

Hahahaha! That is awesome!
In college, a friend and I dressed as Pokemon for a talent show. I was Pikachu, and he was Charmander. The DJ played the TV show's theme song, and we just kept saying our character's names as the lyrics.

Pffft, your thought was lame. Pokemon is rad. Storyline got interesting only in Black/White though, TBH, but they were always really fun. I can't wait to get X.
The problem with B&W was that there was so much left to be explained. They had to make the sequel understandable to 10 year-olds who didn't get the first game. But with X&Y, the sequel can be an add-on, which'd be great. B&W was just at an odd time. Half of the people at the VGC had 3DSes, while the other had DSis and DSes. Quite a few had original DSes they got 8 years ago.

my brother's friend-enemy (an annoying 11 year old) hates me and my friends because we are freshman and still like pokemon. This kid told my brother than I'm a noob because i like pokemon which is "so 2nd grade". Tell that to my large group of video gamer friends who like pokemon who either have/want/cant afford the game. xD That's what came to mind while reading that.
Phhhpht. I hear you. I'm a freshman too. But when people do that, we hide a radio around their home and turn it to full blast in a loop the theme song.
There are usually certain pokemon you can only get in one version, as well as determining which legendary you get, and, as of X and Y, which megastones you get for certain pokemon(Charizard and Mewtwo, for now).

Not sure about X/Y but in the past games, the legendary pokemanz obtained at the end differs. Pearl had Palkia, Diamond has Dialga, Platinum had Giratina.
