Behind The Song, is where I delve into popular songs and their cyrptic meanings. Throughout this series of blogs, you'll be able to submit songs of you're choice! I hope to add a new one each week. Without further ado i'll start on one of my personal favourites: Bastille - Pompeii
Pompeii
Pompeii, is a song by the alternative rock band BASTILLE from London. The song 'Pompeii' is based off the events of what happened to the Roman city of Pompeii.
Despite the song never actually mentioning Pompeii, it hints at it. In an interview with The Daily Times, front man Dan Smith said: 'The reason why we made this song was because it'd be nice to know what the bodies that are frozen in time would say'.
One of the lines being: 'And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we loved' This is to do with the eruption from Mount Vesuvius.
In the song, where it goes Eh-oh eh-oh is to try to show the ancient music types.
The video shows Dan Smith running through LA, trying to evade people with blackened eyes he steals a car, and heads towards, well anywhere. His car runs out of fuel. He wakes up and looks at his reflection he notices his eyes and heads for the mountains. His efforts were in vein as at the end of the video we see his turn black.
To summarise, the song is a great hit that reached No.2 on the UK Singles chart and the forth single from their BAD BLOOD album which gained gold status. The song is an amazing type of: Electronica, Dance Music. But not rave music. The band tried very well to make this single a good one but comparing to where there other singles were on the chart, this was a heart-fluttering attempt at gaining a No.1.
That's it for the first 'Behind The Song', I hope you've enjoyed it, please rate and comment!
