So I've been thinking about Star Fox. It has a new installment coming this fall which is great and stuff, and I'd like it to be the best Star Fox game ever. It hasn't looked that way in my opinion, though.
Let me say this before I get in too far, Assault is by far my favorite Star Fox game. In case you haven't played it and you're one of those obnoxious Star Fox 64 overraters, Assault is basically the one where you're still doing missions like 64 but you are on foot frequently.
And I'll get to the Star Fox 64 overraters shortly since it's not off-topic in a blog about Star Fox in general. Well, that and I do what I want in my blogs anyway.
The reason I like Assault best is actually because of the on-foot missions. Playing as the actual character instead of just knowing the character is inside the vehicle makes for a more immersive world. Even when you get into a vehicle, you know who's in there because you've been playing as Fox outside.
And this is where Star Fox Zero comes in. They've reverted back to the formula of Star Fox 64, which, to be fair, a lot of fans wanted. But they've added this chicken transformation to the Arwings that lets you roam on the ground. This is fine, but it's something that easily could have been on-foot action. Instead, it's more of the "I'm controlling a vehicle and where's the actual character" deal.
Star Fox 64 was good, don't get me wrong. That's my first Star Fox game. It's a lot of fun. And since Wii U seems to be taking a lot of its direction from 64, it's sure to be a lot of fun as well. But it really should be the best Star Fox ever instead of just a fun game.
The story is also something I'd like to discuss. It's a reimagining of the Star Fox story. That's neat.
But that would make four out of seven Star Fox games with the same story concept. SNES was obviously the original story, then 64 reimagined the SNES story, then 3DS remade 64. So this would be the fourth title with a similar storyline.
I can see how a series restart game could help, though. I've not been a fan of the aging system in the story, mostly about Peppy getting older and retiring. I like series a lot better without in-universe chronology, like Mario. Mario doesn't get older. So they have an opportunity to reverse some of the decisions about the Star Fox chronology by reimagining it again. So there's that.
Now that we have that out of the way, let's get to the obnoxious 64 fans.
GUYS SHUT UP.
That was fun. These fans don't like other games because they aren't just like 64. I'll admit, Adventures (essentially a Zelda clone for those who don't know) was a little bit far from the expected for a new Star Fox game, but it was still great and it was still Star Fox. And as I've said, the mechanics in Assault make the game better than just flying on rails. 64 is good, but it shouldn't dictate the rules for every Star Fox game ever.
Almost done. But not until after I get to multiplayer.
Multiplayer was also the best in Assault. Seriously some of the best multiplayer Nintendo has ever created in any game. It involves weapon types, vehicles, explosions, and huge battle stages. Wii U really needs something like this. Really, if they just pull exactly the same gameplay from Assault's multiplayer and add new stages, it would be amazing.
And I'd actually be fine with it if the single player on Wii U didn't outdo the other titles as long as the multiplayer is as good as or better than Assault.
Star Fox Zero is looking great, and hopefully it does end up being the best Star Fox yet.
So those are my thoughts on Star Fox for Wii U, and Star Fox in general.
