"Mornin' Blueberry," Luke mumbles, siping on coffee when I walk in. "Good morning, Hermes," I reply, smiling. "Gotta bring Percy Jackson into this, huh? Anyway... are you, uh, ok?" he asks, setting his cup down to look at me. "...Luke. We agree-" "I know, I know, but you looked... pretty shaken up yesterday. I just wanna make sure that nothing happened," he cuts me off, looking me over worriedly.
I stand up, putting on my jacket and start walking to the door. "Blu!" I turn around, fire in my eyes, daring him to lecture me. "T-take an umbrella. The sky looks ugly," Luke finishes, tossing one at me. I nod and walk out the door with my keys, and after a few seconds, I hear my roommate lock it behind me. No easy exit this time, huh Russian Blu. Stop being such a curious cat. I smile at my thought pun and walk over to the forest. Once I get there, my blood runs cold.
Firetrucks, police cars, ambulances. They all flock around the glorious, cursed trees, ruining the beautiful sight. A man and a women in a uniform run out of the woods, a stretcher in their hands. On the piece of plastic there's an 8 year old boy, his skin looking white.
I feel tears gather in my eyes as I run over, past the policemen that try to hold me back.
"What happened?" I screamed at the people holding the boy. "We... we don't know. He just went into the forest and never came back out. We're lucky we even found him, the search taking us a whole week." the lady replies, hurrying over the the ambulance. Looking around the crowd, I spot my red-headed best friend, and I start to run over.
"Rachel, oh my goodness, I'm so sorry," I weep as I hug her. She's understandably silent, so when she talks, I jump. "His eyes were blue," she mumbles, looking at the trees. "Yes, just like yours," I quietly reply, wiping at my eyes. "I just saw him. His eyes are black. His eyes aren't black," she starts, gaining volume. "Red, are you sure, maybe you saw it wro-" I'm cut off by her screaming. "I THINK I'D KNOW THE EYE COLOR OOF MY OWN DEAD SON!" I jump back at her volume, staring at her warily.
Suddenly, it begins to rain. Then there's sleet. Then there's snow. I look up at the sky in confusion, wondering why it won't make up it's mind when a small ball of ice hits my forehead. Hail. I give my friend my umbrella until she leaves, going into the medical truck. The rest of the crowd eventually make there way back to the station or their home until I'm the only one left. I walk towards the forest, laughing at how the police neglected to tape off the area. As I walk closer I spot my favorite one, turning slightly on my mental path to reach it. I walk around the tree to find that there are words- no- names on the back, all of them with a slash over it. Elliot, James, Carson, Elizabeth, Isabella. The names seem familiar, but I can't seem to place them. Then I see the last name, looking freshly slashed. David.
The name of my best friend's son.
