Specifically weird things I've never understood about the art community, or atleast like, the portion that makes their own characters and stuff. I mean there's plenty of weird shit that I don't get, cause I'm a dumbass but this is like specifically the stuff that every so often when I'm not sleeping, cause pffft who needs to sleep? Not me, but it's the stuff that'll just pop back into my head and I'm always like "Yea I still don't get that" and then I end up not sleeping for like an hour.
But yea. So I never understood like this thing some people do where they just straight up take a pre existing character from a property, like I don't know Pokemon gym leaders for an example and then they just like make them a different species or something and suddenly it's their 100% original character donut steel. I see it every so often and it's always just one of those things where like, I mean I guess it's not hurting anyone you do you, but also like no? It's like always the group of people who only draw dogs too, not even like anthropomorphic dogs, just straight up normal ass dogs. Sometimes furries do it too though and it's still weird.
I mean it's not like it's bad or anything I guess, it's not hurting no one but it's just really weird to me? Like how can you sit down, take a character from a show/movie/game that already exists change nothing but what they look like and suddenly call it your original character. It's also never like a drastic change besides making it like a dog or something it's always still very clearly just "X character but a dog". It just seems weird when they act like its an original character, cause it's really not? I mean I guess the design is kind of theirs, maybe a little? Fuck Idk i just don't get it.
I mean I guess I kind of get it, they like the character. But like fuck man, I like Doomguy but I'd never fucking go make him a dog or something and then be like "Haha this is my original character" mostly because that Idea makes me want to slam my head in a doorway. Also it's just weird. A lot of times when people do that though they also then make the character their fursona, so it's not like they're just drawing fanart but can't draw people.
Honestly everytime I see someone do it I just kind of get this feeling that they basically want to own whatever character it is, but obviously can't so they settle for making a dog clone of it. It's weird man.
Another thing I don't get and tbh straight up don't like most of the times are the people who "kin" other peoples original characters they've made. Like I don't give a shit if you're otherkin or something, I don't get it but as long as you aren't hurting other people have fun I guess. But there's people who specifically "kin" with characters people have made and it's super weird. Half the time they don't ask permission, and a lot of the time when artists tell them "Hey could you maybe not" they'll throw a fit and refuse to stop. Some people will stop, or they get permission and that's fine.
I specifically just don't like the people who refuse to stop. Mostly because those are the ones that do it to act as if they own the character they "kin" with when they don't. They can't get away with copying or stealing the character because they'll get their ass beat so the next best option is just "I AM this character" which is super weird. And uncomfortable. There are plenty of characters that exist there is no reason to be like "I am 100% Suzy's rainbow demon sparkle dog OC" not to mention it's a fictional character, you can't be a fictional character, but whatever.
The last thing I don't really get is people feeling the need to either A.)Compare someones character(s) to ones that already exist or b.)Compare someones character(s) to themself.
I kind of get the first one, people think it's a compliment to say "Oh WOW you character looks so much like -insert popular character here-" but it's kind of not. It doesn't bother some people, and it r e a l l y bother others. I've only had people say it to me a couple times and it mostly annoyed me because the comparison was superficial as fuck, it boiled down to "Wowie zowie Kit, your character has blue hair and black clothes and Sally Face has blue hair and black clothes! They're s o similar!"
I don't understand at all why people feel the need to do the second one though. I mean I guess you see a character and are like "Wow, we have similar personalities, neato" it's mostly annoying. I've only ever had it happen once where someone commented on how similar they were to a character I made and my reaction wasn't annoyance. Because they straight up had the same name and a similar personality to the character and it was a weird coincidence. Every other time it's happened though it's just been annoying.
It almost never ends up being a reason the person says it like the one I got, it's usually a really superficial thing where they don't actually understand jack shit about the character other than the really basic shit like "Wow, they're sad?? So am I! We're like the same person."
I literally don't know how many times a kid has told me they're sooooo much like one of my characters, and it's always the one who was tortured. Always. Like bucko if you're so much like her get some therapy man holy shit you're probably gonna need it.
I don't understand it. Why are people like this. Why do we exist? Why do we do the things that we do?
I have no answers, but it's like 4 AM almost, I am going to bed. Enjoy. I feel like I may have talked about some of this before in other blogs I've made, but who knows, I don't remember what half my old blogs are. I'm sure they're all horrible and I'd want to delete them if I went back and looked.
