As many of you may know, I am atheist. However, haveing been born and raised Catholic, I have much knowlage of the religion, and over a series of blogs I will be attempting to give some of that knowlage to you. So listen up yall :]!
So I will begin this first blog in the beginning. Even before God created the Earth He created the angels. The angels were created to serve God. One third of them, however, did not like God's plan for the world, they did like having to bow to mankind, they did not like the idea of God sending a Son into the world. In response to this, they tried to overthrow God. The chief leader of these was an archangel (the most powerful type of angel) named Lucifer, a Latin name meaning 'Light-Bearer' or 'Light-Bringer'.
"Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him." -Revelation 12:7-9
As stated in the above passage, the archangel Michael and his angels fought for God, and defeated the angels, now called Fallen Angels. It is also said that michael himself slayed the 'great dragon' and cast him into Hell, a place God had created for those whos hearts were made of evil.
Because of the sin of Lucifer, death and evil were brought into the world. He himself is sometimes called the 'tempter', because his sole purpous is to tempt us humans into sinning against God, and joining the devil in Hell.
In the Old Testiment, Satan first appeared in Genesis 3, where Satan, in the appearence of a serpent, tricked the woman Eve into eating the fruit of the forbidden tree, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
"And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons." -Genesis 3:2-7
This sin, the first sin, had many ramifications. It weakened the human will to devil's temptations. It brought pain and suffering. It lead to the ejection from the Garden of Eden. It created Original Sin (the sin that every single human being was born with, except for Mary and Jesus.) But most of all, it brought evil.
Ever since that day, the devil has been working against us, tempting us, tricking us, to do evil.
Please note that this is the Catholic Church's teaching on the matter, other religions have differing views on the devil. Any and all hate comments will be deleted.
Great blog! One thing, though: The name "Lucifer" was merged into Christianity when many European Pagans became Christians sometime around the Dark Ages. "Satan" refers to "the deceiver" because of the agendas he can create (many times as various temptations through the Bible). Lucifer was later attributed to Satan because he was a mythological demon of darkness with a deceptive name that means "light-bearer".
your a brave athiest, a few of my freind who are athiest dont really want to mess with stuff like that. i think thats good in a person, to express things that lots of people wouldnt relly do, and the amount of info was relly good. if this was 1-5 stars rating (1= worst, 5= best) i would say 5
accepted, reason: This is good as most of the religious blogs on here are about christianity & alternative religions. (though I know Chriatian & Catholic teachings are similar)
