This is a poem I made for a project in history class when I was in 8th grade. It's about this famous person who helped mentally ill people get better treatments.

I am Dorothea Dix
I wonder how mentally ill people are treated in prison
I hear they are jailed with criminals, and sometimes left in dark cells without clothes
I see them chained to the walls and being beaten up by others
I am Dorothea Dix, a middle- lass reformer who visits prisons
I pretend that if I speak with the state legislature they will built facillities for the mentally ill
I feel proud for what I did and now more tha 100 state hospitals were built to help them
I touch the prison's walls and remember how people were treated there
I worry that someone in the world might still have ill people jailed with criminals in their prisons
I cry as I remember that prisons also held runaway children and orphans and were punished the same way as adults
I am Dorothea Dix
I understand that reformers tried to end the overcrowding and cruel conditions in prisons
I say “We should do something to help the people who are treated bad in prisons”
I dream of children in school learning and not been punished in prisons
I try my best to help change the rules in prison
I hope my accomplishments helped people understand that mentally ill and children do not deserve to be jailed with criminals
I am Dorothea Dix, a middle-class reformer who visits prisons
