“Come on, Alex! We’re leaving!” my mother’s voice rang through the now deserted house, which I was now standing in.
“In a minute!” I called back. I was busy taking in every detail from the house. From every eggshell-white wall, to every tiny crack in the floor of my room. I took in a breath of air trying to make the house leave an imprint on my mind. I shuddered at the thought of yesterday’s announcement at breakfast.
“Leave!? We cant leave! I’ve never left the city in my life!!!” I protested angrily, I had lost many fights with my mother over the years, but today, I wasn’t going to lose. Not today.
“I really don’t see what the problem is, Alex. Your cousin melody lives across the road from our new house, so at least you will know a few people there, Alex.” My mother said. She obviously didn’t see how as well as I didn’t want to leave, my friends didn’t want me to leave either.
“My friends too!! Do you know how long it took me to get popular at school!? If I go to a new one, I’ll have to start all over again!!” I kind of bent the truth on that one; it actually hadn’t taken long for everyone to start liking me. One of my friends, Tyler had been on the football (or ‘soccer’ as you call it), and hockey teams, so I was in. me having as much luck getting a friend that lives across the street on all the school sports? Fat chance.
“Im sure you will make many friends. And you can keep in touch with them, by writing or calls, or something. And plus we will have more money, a beautiful house by the ocean, and I’m not sure we really have a choice, Alex. I’ve been moved there. If we don’t go, I’ll be fired.” My mother explained, I knew that she was trying to make me feel sympathetic for her.
“well, why don’t you just find a new job then?” I asked. I was going to find every explanation. Every possible loophole. I wasn’t losing. No. not this time.
My mother sighed as she gave her response, “finding a good paying job these days isn’t that easy, Alex.’’
“Well, sure it is!” I retorted. Even though she was probably right about the job, I wasn’t going down. I was being stubborn.
“Im sorry Alex, I know how much you don’t want to leave, but we don’t have a choice. We’re moving to Miami tomorrow, and that’s it.”
Hearing the sound of my mother’s voice again brought me back into reality.
“Hurry up Alex! We need to be on the plane by noon on if we’re going to get there by nine thirty!”
“I’m coming, mom!” I shouted back. I heard my voice ring off of the bare walls. I picked up my last box of stuff, and made my way to the front door. the front door, trying to take up as much time as possible. When I got outside, I saw Tyler and Roxanne both with low faces. I guess they came to say goodbye, for one last time.
“You’re leaving? Without a fight? That’s not the Alex Ridgewall I know!” Roxanne remarked. She was one of the few people who knew me best. She knew everything about me. I couldn’t keep one secret from her it was like she could read my mind or something.
“Oh, I put up a fight alright,” I began while wiping my blonde hair out of my eye, “I just didn’t win the battle.” It crushed me to have to say that we would probably never see each other again.
“So, I guess you guys came to bid me a farewell?” I asked sadly.
“Well,” Tyler began, “kind of, we came to give you this,” he said as he pulled out a small purple box.
“It’s a necklace, we made it for you. It’s something that will let you remember us better.” He said while handing me the box. I took it and put it into my box of stuff.
“Tyler did the words on the back, and I did most of the crafting since my dad works with jewellery, so he helped me.” Roxanne said. I caught Tyler blushing out of the corner of my eye. That gave a small grin, but that didn’t last long.
“Thank you, I really appreciate it! So, since I won’t be at school tomorrow,” I began with a sad tone in my voice,” you need to tell every one that I wont be back… ever…” I said trying not to cry. I had never cried in my life.
“We’re sorry, Alex, we wish there was something we could do to make you stay.” Roxanne said in a miserable tone.
“Alex! We need to go now!” I heard my mothers voice shout from the car. I looked back at my friends whom I were now leaving behind.
“I– I- I have to go…” I said, trying not to break into a fit of tears. As I walked over to the cobalt blue sedan, I turned around to see Tyler and Roxanne waving me a glum farewell. As I climbed into the back seat of the car, I put the box down beside my seat, and took out the small violet box. I opened it finding a beautiful heart shaped necklace that was very well crafted, and granite crystal encrusted. On the back, I found some writing;
No matter how dark your day seems,
Happiness can always be found when you need it the most.
Live, and Laugh, because life's troubles can never keep you down.
Just smile, and keep moving forward…
