I was back in Olivine City. The gym leader there, it turned out, had some business to attend to at the lighthouse while I was there before. I returned from some training to Olivine City near the Safari Zone, which had recently opened, a little emotional. Kelli, a Machop I had caught earlier at Mt. Mortar had died during our training. She had worked herself too hard and refused to stop, and eventually a Tauros had trampled her. Anyways, The Safari Zone was cool and all, but I didn't stay too long. The Pokemon there just seemed too ripe for the taking, like they were put there just to be caught. And, I guess they were, since it was a theme park after all, and I guess I didn't like that. But now, I was ready to continue my quest, and it seemed that fate was as well, considering Jasmine had returned to her gym.
The gym itself didn't have a gimmick, like all of the other gyms in Johto had. It was just a straight walk to the battlefield where Jasmine was awaiting patiently. She nodded as I entered the gym. "Hello, Star," she greeted me as I took my place on the challengers side of the field. "Hello, Jasmine." I returned her greeting, throwing a wave in the mix as well. She grinned and withdrew a Pokeball from her pocket. "Shall we begin?" she asked. I grabbed a Pokeball of my own and pressed the button, enlarging it. "Sure. Go, Rafflesia!" I threw my Pokeball, and Rafflesia, my Gloom, appeared on to the battlefield. I caught Rafflesia on Route 48, where I was training earlier. "Go, Magnemite." She threw her Pokeball, and her Magnemite appeared on the side of the field opposite of Rafflesia.
"Magnemite, Thunderbolt." Jasmine commanded. The magnets on her Magnemites sides began to rotate rapidly as a beam of electricity shot towards Rafflesia, hitting her dead center. She slid backwards a ways, leaving skid marks in the dirt battlefield, but shook the blow off. "Rafflesia, Sleep Powder!" Rafflesia jumped at Magnemite and shook the flower on top of her head, releasing green spores that stuck to Magnemite, inducing it in to a deep sleep. I looked at Jasmine for any reactions, but she simply stood there and watched blankly.
"Alright, Rafflesia, switch out." I raised my Pokeball and returned him in to it. "Go, Prince Kai!" I threw another Pokeball, sending out Prince Kai. Jasmine's expression hadn't changed. not even bothering to yell to wake her Magnemite up. "Prince Kai, Flamethrower!" I had also played some Game Corner in Goldenrod and picked up a useful TM. Prince Kai's mouth started to ignite with flames. He reared his head back, then flung it forward, sending the searing flames towards Jasmine's Magnemite. Prince Kai's Flamethrower hit hard, and the whirring coming from Magnemite had almost completely stopped. One more should do the trick.
"Prince Kai, one more time!" He reared his head back once again, and send a stream of flames at the Magnemite, silencing the steady whir. Magnemite had died. Jasmine winced, but other than that showing no emotion. She raised her Pokeball and returned the Magnemite to it's Pokeball. She reached for another and threw it on to the battlefield, releasing another Magnemite. Well, this might be easier than I thought. "Prince Kai, Flamethrower." Another stream of flames, another Magnemite corpse, this time only needing one hit to end it's life. Again, Jasmine had only flinched, showing no emotion otherwise. It had started to make me suspicious... Shouldn't she be mouring over her Pokemon? Did she have a heart at all?
Jasmine returned her now dead Magnemite, and threw her last Pokeball, sending out her Steelix. I decided to switch as well, and send out Rafflesia again. "Steelix, Iron Tail!" Steelix lunged towards Rafflesia and swung her giant metal tail at her head. Rafflesia had no time to dodge, and died on impact, landing in a heap out of the arena. "RAFFLESIA!" I yelled, and ran over to him. I picked her up and returned her to my Pokeball. "You did well, Rafflesia..." I put the Pokeball in my pocket and sent out Geos. Jasmine still hadn't showed any emotion, as if she had done nothing wrong.
"Geos, use Surf!" A giant wave had started to form at Geos' feet, growing in size quickly and swamping the battlefield, hitting Jasmine's Steelix with great force. "Steelix, Iron Tail." Steelix swung his tail at Geos, but he took the blow a bit better, shaking it off. I examined Steelix, and found that one more Surf should do it. "Geos, one more Surf!" Geos again generated a giant wave, knocking the Steelix on to it's side and killing it. He looked towards Jasmine, waiting for any emotion, but again, she merely winced. She returned her Steelix and walked towards me, Geos growling at her on the way by. Jasmine presented me with the badge and walked to her room. I thought I'd heard a sob as she left.
As I left the Gym, Jasmine ran out after me. "Uhm, Star?" She sniffled. "... Yes?" I turned around to face her. Her cheeks were red and wet, sparkling in the moonlight outside. She looked at the ground, avoiding my gaze. "I hope you win... The league, I mean. You're a talented trainer." She said shyly. "Oh, okay. Thank you." I nodded. She nodded back and walked back in to her gym. I headed to the Pokemon Center, a little bit confused, but happy that she came out to wish me luck.
