A new app on both the iphone and android is sweeping the nation, or at least my instagram. People continue to post their highest scores on social networking sites. This game interested me because I like competition and video games. I had no clue to expect. I downloaded the tiny app, seriously this thing took up no space on my phone's memory (exaggeration).
Turning on the app, you are greeted with a simple title screen. I pressed play and it drops you into the game. No literally, the bird fell violently onto the floor. Apparently, I was so excited I forgot to read the instructions. All you have to do is the touch the screen how hard could it be. VERY!!!!! The only warning about the difficulty is the "Get Ready!" sign. Well I go head first and crash again.
Why do I continue to crash? Well, let me explain the hardships of flappy the bird. This bird needs constant tapping or it stops flying. That's not the worst part. He makes it look like he will slowly drop a few millimeters but no he then pelmets head first in less than half a second. This game is like an abusive relationship. Every time, you beat your high score it's like Kool Aid Man breaking a wall (OH YEAH!!). But when you crash, it feels like horrible like Banjo Koozie: Nuts and Bolts.
Also, the crash is so sudden and that mere instant a white screen flashes so quick. I am not one who is sensitive to sudden flashes; however, the speed which it happens hurts my eyes. After listening to the annoying bird wing flap sound, I realized why doesn't this game have music? Seriously, every game I know had some type of musical accompaniment. The only ones that didn't were the earliest games in existence. Well, I decided to look through my phone for music and it certainty helps the game. I personally chose to play only instrumentals, because singing distracts you. And you cannot get distracted when playing this game on else, you lose. This also made me cuss at the door because of the wind.
Now, this game is all about gameplay. The idea is wonderful. It is all about strategy. The whole concept is to fly the bird perfectly between pipes. Yes, pipes stolen directly out of the Mario series. Actually, many elements are stolen from the Mario Brothers, My favorite is the number font, which was been used for years as Mario's coin count. Overall, it's a very addicting and awarding game. Every time you beat you're personal best, you get that awesome feel (aka your brain produces dopamine).
Graphics wise, I think it is laughable. It tries to have this classic whatever amount bit look (it looks higher than 16 and lower than 64 32?). However, it fails badly. Look at the bird sprite, I know it's a profile of a bird, but come on! It has no forehead (or whatever birds have) The whole front is an eye and a small mouth. Yes mouth, it does not have a beak. The background is cities that change color every few times you die. There are not that impressive. The creators should of made it a plain blue background. I mean City Connection for the NES had better city backgrounds. From screenshots of people, who went far with this little freak bird show no change in scenery. Also the bird has no legs. Not to mention, it's a colored oval. No wonder this guy falls at Mach ten.
TIPS by the way I am not great at this game so these tips are not gold.
1 find music with a nice flowing beat little changes. Most hip hop beats are good for this task.
2 Always try to be under the pipes, because it's easier to fly upwards then fall downwards.
3 Be Patient and don't hurt yourself.
4 It's a bird. It doesn't deserve the abuse. Just way away.
5 Don't cuss. I am typing this review because I been sent to my room for cursing.
6 Give me a +1. It is good for your karma and necessary to achieve a high score.
My goal in almost every high score games is 1,000,000. This is because I want a million dollars, but points are easier. How many points is the highest I have seen? Well, to achieve the highest score you have to get over 10,000 (Sorry Dragon Ball Z fans but it's already OVER NINE THOUSAND). Download this game if you like killing time and birds.
I will tell you the star rating I gave the app. I gave it 3 1/2. The only reason it's in the half way point is because I think the team could of done something more. Plus, I am only playing because I am competeing with my friends. Plus, this gives me more bitter than sweet if you know what I mean. After getting to a certain point, you realise all the time you wasted and for what (the flappy bird Champion?).
It's addicting and somehow topping the charts across platforms! Everyone at my school is playing it. Remember how Temple Run had it's shine? I feel like this is the same!
I don't see why everyone plays it. It's not that much fun. And on top of that, it's extremely difficult. It also needs vast improvement. Reply to this comment if anyone has beat my highscore of 58. Lol.
