Tim has been studying all night and began to become bored. Having no clue what to do he pulls out a pocket dictionary. While reading this small book, he came across a whole list of compound words that started with home. Little did he know that those same words would change his life? He took a small sheet of paper and wrote them all down. He saw the next word after the list was homicide and had a laugh, because he read it beginning with home. Tim thought why not try to make a silly rap about it. Tim had no clue how to write rap but he started with his list. After that part of his first verse, he wrote a few silly lines that followed no beat or flow. He remembered some words that rhymed with dictionary and made a simple chorus. The second verse was more challenging, so he thought of other compound words that began with the same word. He thought the word brother has to have some. He found his second list and wrote a second verse. This silly song with no beat or flow would change his life.
Tim went into school showing his best friend the quick idea he had. For the first time, he had a large group of people surround him. Everyone laughing at the few witty lines and the whole concept. Everyone knew Tim as the smart kid, who constantly read the dictionary. This ode to his dictionary spun his whole reputation upside-down. Alex asked the lay backed teacher to read the rap out to the class. The teacher welcomed Tim, knowing his personality would not make an implicit song. With courage, the young “rapper” stood up from his seat looked at the class and began to read his “rap” to the class. He gain applause and everyone enjoyed the song a great deal. This moment turned the quiet kid into a corny rapper. His inexperience at rapping and his misunderstanding of rap caused a struggle in his future. Right now, he didn’t care, because he finally received recognition from his fellow peers. He moved on with his head held high.
Still feeling the excitement from the class still generating in his body, Tim decided to continue writing corny rhymes about things he enjoyed ranging from almost anything. One thing that topped all other interests was a beautiful brunette in his class. This amazing person who skipped through his life was Cristina. He wrote some songs for her and was trying to build up courage to ask her out. Instead, Tim was still shy and could not find the courage. Tim was going through quick changes and did not have a clear plan in life at this early age of thirteen. Many plans came and went without any starting and ending. This plan was sadly one of those plans.
Ch. 2 Uncertainty
“I am psycho maybe even a sicko”.
Everyone was still buzzing about the silly song that Tim wrote that they began to nickname him Slim Tim. Tim did not want that to stick so he had to come up with a name fast. Tim was a die-hard Eminem fan; however, he did not want the name to be that obvious. Tim looked at his pocket dictionary and thesaurus. Still thinking about his unwanted nickname he decided to find symptoms.
Tim turned the pages quickly and found slim. He read out loud, “Thin, trim, slight, and lean”. None of the words seem to make his name appealing. Then, he quickly thought of synonyms for shady may work. He quickly turned a few pages backwards and found the word, dim.
Eureka he thought that name works perfectly. Dim was a mysterious and dark name that could be easily worked into a character. Tim had a fascination for the works of Poe especially after reading The Raven. Dim could also be a name that could imply a person being dumb. Tim could use this to comment on the days that he was placed in special and now, has the highest GPA of the class. Tim excited with his new name started to write more and more songs.
Among his first songs were a set of love songs stating the ways he had a crush on a girl in his class. This system of writing songs would lead him into the next stage of his career. Tim had to decide who he liked knowing that he cannot write about two girls and not make the other jealous if he started to date someone.
Ch. 3 Shot in the Dark
“I like Janine like nerds like Wolverine”
Janine was nice girl that Tim knew before the first grade. To him, she was his best friend. Tim’s friend. In the fourth grade, Anthony had a crush on her. Being the kid that Tim was, he told Janine that Anthony liked her; however, she thought she saw through Tim’s words. Janine said that she thought Tim liked her and said it will never happen. Three years later, Tim and Janine became best friends and talked everyday on the school bus.
When Tim had to decide who he liked, he remember what Janine said. Out of all the girls in the class, Janine was the only one, who saw him as a friend. He began to write about her and even sent her a couple lines. Janine laughed at him and repeated the statement it will never happen.
Tim played it off as a joke and began to discuss how he liked Cristina. Janine asked him what he liked about her and Tim started to say how he liked the way she sang. Cristina was an amazing singer and could move people with the emotion she put into her song. Tim admired singers because it was a skill that he felt he could never have. He did not want to be a rapper; however, his singing voice was so bad that he got an A in music for not trying to sing.
Everyone hated his voice and thought he was weird. No one would listen to him and rap gave Dim Tim an outlet that gave him the attention of people. Tim liked the attention at first; however, hip hop did not give him the friends he wanted. Instead, everyone wanted to read his songs yet avoided the artist. Tim did not want the praise and began to hate the admiration. He hid his face when he started a YouTube channel because he wanted people to get to know him before his music.
The only person that he knew Tim well before his music was Janine. And Tim knew he had no chance in Hell. This anger was bottled up because he still liked Janine and she was still his friend.
Tim believed that he had no chance with Cristina, too. He may have been right. He thought maybe he was crazy and the only girl that could like him had to be insane, too. Tim embraced his insanity and began telling stories about how delusional he truly was.
Ch. 4 Character Madness
“You better watch your phraseology well I teach you some mathology.”
Tim joined the drama club back in the fifth grade and had minor parts because of his age. In the seventh grade, Tim received a role of Mayor Shinn in The Music Man. Every play, Tim tried to embody his character and this play was his favorite one yet. The best part was the fact that Cristina was his wife in the play. Tim loved the idea and tried his best to make that character the best it could be.
Cristina was an excellent actor. She could take the role of almost anyone and perform it amazing. She studied the way each character acted, talked, and push it over the top. Tim, on the other hand, put his own personal twist on the character. He made the character him and made him the character. Mayor Shinn fit the inarticulate person that Tim felt he was.
He literally practiced with Cristina every week for the production; however, he was still afraid to tell her what he felt. He rather just enjoy the experience of being in the play with his crush than get crushed by his crush. Tim’s fear of expression lead him into writing and rapping.
He wanted a group to rap with but being the unsociable person he was. He created characters to rap as and start dialogue. He came up with names for each of these groups such as Seen 5 and Puppet Three. His love for characters and fiction was a gateway into having deep conversation with myself.
Puppet Three was created because of his love for ventriloquism especially Jeff Dunham. He made the group with an angel paper puppet, a Kool Aid Man cutout, and the Socko created by Mick Foley. Mick Foley had a huge impact on his life. The Three faces of Foley shown Tim that he could go in and out of these characters and still seem normal. Tim shown off his insanity and began to connect the things he loved with his rap game.
