Guys, defaulting on our debt is seriously the only thing we can do. If a country as big and far-reaching as the United States defaults on such a monstrous debt, it's affect the entire global economy in a very adverse way. There is no panacea for this. You either shoot your heart and die almost instantly or shoot your gut and die from blood loss some time later it seems like...

Exactly. But, they decided that keeping things in shambles and saving face is what was better. Oh well, we'll see in a few months or years what happens, maybe they'll just cut the figurative cord, and we can be done with it.
Destroy, Rebuild.
Whoa bro, better slow down bro, don't wanna be a bro, bro.
Many are missing the point here. The debt bill has been made to sound much better than it actually is. Most know that it raises the borrowing limit, less know that it does cut spending, and even fewer know that it is full of special interest spending; thus the product of a bipartisan deal. By no means is the raising of the debt ceiling a solution--rather it is a means of survival. You should realize that if the United States government defaults on its debt, interest rates on virtually everything would skyrocket, stocks would take huge hits, unemployment would be up in the hundreds of thousands, and all government workers would be jobless. Is that worth erasing the federal debt?
As for a proper solution to the rapidly ballooning debt, that is highly debatable.
I think it's safe to say that someone's going to have a problem with any plan passed or proposed, obviously. But, I don't think anyone has thought of a good plan really. Why not cut part of the defense budget? Really, I think it'd be better to cut from there than proposing to cut from Education, for example. Healthcare... Meh, there's really no way to get access to it if you actually need it anyway. :P
A random article on Nation's spending on Military/Defense, Healthcare, and Education. Thank you, Google.
Waffle, I implore you to move to Mexico.
Whoa bro, better slow down bro, don't wanna be a bro, bro.
But I agree that less defence spending is important. The price of a single tank is $4M. One aircraft carrier? Four Billion U.S. Dollars. In total we spend $607B per year.
Goodbye my only friend. Oh, did you think I meant you?
True Nox, but there's always a better option. Cut Defense, leave Education alone, trim from Healthcare[seeing as how it's near-impossible to use,] and just stop over-spending on the things we don't need.
Whoa bro, better slow down bro, don't wanna be a bro, bro.
Mexico, rather die in cartel crossfire than the Military.
Whhhaaaaat?! Nox, are you saying that each Congressmen should not be allowed 3 cars, only 2 of which they use, a gigantic mansion, and a non-negative Checking Account? BLASPHEMY. But honestly, lazy satire aside, I agree.
Whoa bro, better slow down bro, don't wanna be a bro, bro.
* Cut the Dept of Education and No Child Left Behind (Leave education at the state and local level.)
* Close down many of the overseas military bases, bringing troops home to guard the south border against the violent drug cartels.
* Cut the Environmental Protection Agency since states have their own agencies already.
* Cut the National Endowment for the Arts. If art is not good enough to sell, the artist should not get money for it.
* Fully audit Medicare and Social Security for fraud. It's estimated by the Congressional Budget office that fraud accounts for at least 10%, maybe up to 20%.
These ideas are just a start. Once they are done, there is plenty more to cut, but just these alone will balance the budget. Any further cuts and reforms will begin paying down the debt and allow for tax cuts to spur the economy and pull the US out of these economic troubles.
This year will certainly test the mettle of our governing officials. We'll see whether or not bipartisanship is just a myth. If thing continue as they have between the two major parties, I see little chance of anything improving soon.
