This really should have gone into the "tips" thread, but I'll cut you some slack. With regards to your strategy: choosing which character is mainly a matter of personal preference. I tend to like SavantInamorata the best because I tend to play a battle-centric game that allows for more items early in the game, while usually shunning Skunkman because he starts off very slow. In my opinion, HullBreach is the middle road--using him can be fast or slow depending on how exactly the extra cash is used.

I used savant merely because I wanted to, it doesn't matter how you start it's always possible to get into overlord status.
