Keep in mind that not everything Holmes had in Colorado was legal. He did set up illegal explosives in his apartment that the swat team was able to diffuse. If he hadn't blurted out, during the arrest, that his apartment was rigged, many more people would have died in the explosion of his apartment building than those even injured in the cinema shooting.

The cities in the USA with the highest murder rates (Chicago and Washington, D.C.) also have the strictest gun control laws. Law breakers will always find a way to get guns, and the law abiders will not be able to defend themselves.

During the American Revolution, there were no semi-automatic weapons (Those came about 60 years later.), but families did defend their property with cannons and mortars. Try keeping a mortar round or large, loaded cannon in your front yard today. I'm sure the police would not be impressed. The right of life through defense or hunting for food are import aspects of Americans, from the colonial era to today; thus the U.S. Constitution has the right to keep and bear arms enshrined in the Second Amendment.

The problem is not that guns exist; it was that someone with known psychological problems was so easily able to acquire an arsenal of weaponry on government grant funds meant for college expenses, after he dropped out of college and remained unemployed.

That's what I mean by gun laws. They should have a thorough psychological assessment before allowing them to have guns (in Britain you also need a genuine reason other than defence.) All firearms should be forced to be registered so bureaucrats can regularly check medical records. This probably looks like tyranny but it's better to be controlling when it comes to stuff like this.

To clarify, medical records are mental health stuff only. Just in case you thought it was an invasion of privacy.
