NASA have figured out a way to create a warp drive (moving space through space) which would allow us to reach the Alpha Centuri in two weeks which is approximately 4.3 light years away.
This would make Andromeda even closer to us than ever before (we could send people there).
They announced that they are conducting preliminary research into Miguel Alcubierre's warp drive equations to determine if they may be usable to construct a warp drive one day. Such research takes decades and sometimes results in a dead end.
There has never been experimental proof of matter with negative gravity, which is a requirement to build such a drive in its final form. It's possible that some kind of exotic matter, like dark matter, exhibits negative gravity, but no dark matter has ever been found near Earth to test.
