Breaking today is that the US State Department has ordered its "nonessential" diplomats out of Lebanon while Congress continues to deliberate. Lebanon is allies with Syria and borders them on the west, while US Navy warships are poised off the coast of both countries. Meanwhile, Russia has ships moving into the east Mediterranean, and wherever they touch water, torpedoes tend to follow. Most would prefer these circumstances to be precautions rather than signs of things to come.
That Iran will have its combatants aggressively attack Baghdad and other American bases in Iraq following a strike on Syria--just solidifies the fact that while there is slow progress in Iraq, there is also that constant stream of insurgency coming from Iran and Syria to impede it. The entire Middle East has weapons aimed at one another, with a massive crosshair painted on Israel. A series of bombings does not make up for alleged genocide/massacre, instead it stirs up a chain of trouble possibly resulting in lost alliances, with toxic Syria at the head of it all. And through all this, the UN is tight-lipped, silently proving their worth yet again.
I can't wait for the day (which I doubt I'll see) when oil runs dry in the Middle East. At this point, all the warmongers will lose their revenue flow, and their power to secure weapons will considerably diminish. This region has been volatile for millennia, but they have just this past century gained the funds to be major threats to the world.
On one hand, Moscow calls for Syria to relinquish control of chemical weapons (sarin gas confirmed). On the other, they say they will defend Syria from an attack. Fine example of playing politics because whichever Syrian party owns such weapons is not kowtowing to hand them over. Putin hints at the gas attacks being a frame job by rebels trying to spur foreign intervention. Surely the sniper shots fired on an investigation team en route to the attack sites incriminate neither party? Evident only is years-long infighting.
On a humorous note, a tee shirt with the acronym "LMAO": Limited Military Action Overseas.
Rather, Syria's agreement to their terms is tongue in cheek. A PR statement for show. Putin has received a lot of credit for being far more diplomatic than Obama. More evident with the handing over of talks and a chemical weapons ban treaty over to the US. Notice the absence of the term "WMD" as the administration does their best effort of not invoking Bush vibes. As much as Syria hates America and its allies, they still prefer a smile-nod agreement complete with signatures while continuing their warfaring business. Same story when UN inspectors roll in, get a nice hand holding session, and report good things.
Isn't it funny how the only countries that signed on with the Obama admin were France and Turkey - both former colonial powers that have staked claim to Syria?
